New Monasticism or New Monastic Movements is one of the prominent characteristics of contemporary Christian spirituality. This paper aims to explore Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove’s thoughts and experiences on the New Monasticism and to apply the insights to Korean churches. First, the writer summarizes the various aspects of New Monasticism in terms of Roman Catholics, Anglicans, and American Evangelicals. Dealing with New Monasticism, the Roman Catholics concern interfaith dialogue with other religions, the Anglicans emphasize new expressions of church in terms of mission, and the American Evangelicals attempt to apply the wisdom of old monasticism on communal life to contemporary society. Second, the writer probes the New Monasticism of Wilson-Hartgrove. His spirituality was mainly nurtured by the Benedictine monasticism and harvests through the Rutba House, community of hospitality. The ground of spiritual formation in his community consists of the stability in communal life, the prayerful liturgy using Common Prayer and the practical reinterpretation of catechism. The community extends its practice to radical hospitality, social justice over racism, and economic life inspired by the belief on the Kingdom of God. Lastly, the writer applies the insights from Wilson-Hartgrove’s New Monasticism to Korean Protestant churches, by comparing with monastic movements, community movements, and Maeul-Mokhoe (village ministry). The writer views that the NewMonasticismcan provide new understanding of monasticism to Korean Protestant churches. The monasticism is not about keeping rules and wearing habit but about radical discipleship. It is about living together and practicing hospitality. It is about having intention to live an alternative life following the will of God in this world.

기독교영성의 현대적 특징 중 하나가 새로운 수도원주의(New Monasticism) 또는 새로운 수도원 운동(New Monastic Movements)이다. 이 논문은 조너선 윌슨하트그로 브의 새로운 수도원 운동의 특성을 살펴보고 한국 교회에 적용하는 것을 목적으로 한 다. 이 논문에서 필자는 먼저, 새로운 수도원 운동의 양상을 가톨릭, 성공회, 그리고 미국 복음주의 등 세 종류로 구분해서 그 특성을 살펴본다. 가톨릭의 새로운 수도원 운동은 기독교를 넘어서 다른 종교의 영성에서 잇닿아 있다는 특성이 있고, 성공회의 새로운 수도원 운동은 교회의 새로운 표현으로 선교적인 맥락에서 강조되고 있으며, 미국 복음주의의 새로운 수도원 운동은 전통적인 수도 생활이 지니고 있는 영성적, 공동체적, 대안 문화적인 장점들을 현대 사회에 맞게 접목하려고 노력한다는 특성이 있다. 다음으로 윌슨하트그로브가 주창하는 새로운 수도원 운동을 살펴본다. 그의 회 심은 베네딕트 수도회의 영성에서 자양분을 얻으며 자랐고, 환대의 공동체인 루트바 에서 열매를 맺었다고 할 수 있다. 공동체에 정주하는 삶,『공동기도서』를 중심으로 한 기도의 예전과 일상생활에 구체적으로 접목해서 재해석한 교리가 영성 형성의 기 반을 이루고 있다. 아울러 공동체의 활동은 환대의 철저한 실천, 인종차별 문제를 근본적으로 넘어서려는 정의의 실천, 그리고 하나님 나라의 경제 관념에 기반한 경제적 실천 등을 구체적으로 보여주고 있다. 마지막으로 필자는 윌슨하트그로브의 새로운 수도원 운동을 한국 교회에 접목해본다. 한국 개신교회의 수도원 운동, 공동체 운동, 그리고 마을 목회 등의 선교적 교회 운동과 비교해본다. 필자가 보기에 새로운 수도원 운동은 한국 개신교회에 수도원에 대한 이해를 새롭 게 할 수 있는 계기를 마련해준다. 수도원은 율법적 규칙 준수와 제복에 대한 것이 아니라 철저한 제자도에 관한 것이다. 수도원은 삶을 함께하는 것에 대한 것이며, 환 대하는 공동체에 대한 것이다. 수도원은 세상의 가치관과 문화를 따르지 않는 하나님 나라의 대안적인 삶을 지향하는 것에 대한 것이다.
