This study looked at webtoon writers who produce webtoons in the rapidly growing webtoon market as media content producers and examined their identity, creative motivation, and characteristics of labor. In particular, from the perspective of cultural studies in the media sector, we looked into the identity of webtoon writers and the characteristics of the labor process, and paid attention to the difficulties, achievements, and rewards in the labor process. Nine webtoon writers who are active in the field were conducted in-depth interviews, received self-description, and analyzed by combining various qualitative data such as media articles. First, webtoon writers showed pride in creative labor while living the life of "Turning-a-hobby-into-a-job" that makes their favorite work a job, and second, they responded sensitively to comments by trying to understand the tastes and trends of the readers. Third, webtoon artists showed their identity as experimental and challenging cultural producers such as "Culture Advancement Team," "Content Experimenter," and "Story Producer," and fourth, they expressed satisfaction with webtoon growth and its changed status as ‘a powerful medium’ in a year or two, despite the difficulty of collaboration and hard work. Until his debut, he revealed the unstable labor without pay, the burden of weekly serialization, the pain of writing and painting together, and the idea that successful work with excessive working hours can be rewarded, which shows the characteristics of creative labor in the cultural industry. This study is meaningful in that it viewed webtoon writers as media producers within the huge cultural industry and illuminated them as cultural producers rather than simply drawing cartoons. However, there is a limit to the institutional pressure or structural problems that webtoon writers feel in the production process. In the changing webtoon market, we look forward to follow-up studies on the survival strategies of webtoon artists and conflicts between platforms and agencies.

이 연구는 빠르게 성장하고 있는 웹툰 시장에서 웹툰을 생산해 내는 웹툰 작가를 미디어 콘텐츠 생산 자로 보고 그들의 정체성과 창작동기, 노동의 특성을 살펴보았다. 특히 미디어 영역 내 문화연구의 시각 에서 웹툰 작가들의 정체성과 노동과정의 특성을 들여다보며 노동과정에서의 난관과 성취와 보람은 무 엇인지에 주목하였다. 현장에서 활발하게 활동 중인 웹툰작가 9명을 연구대상으로 삼아 심층인터뷰를 진 행하고 자기기술지를 받았으며 언론 기사 등 다양한 질적 자료를 조합하여 분석하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 웹툰 작가들은 자신들이 좋아하는 일을 직업으로 삼는 ‘덕업일치’의 삶을 살면서 창의 노동에 대한 자부 심을 드러냈으며, 둘째, 수용자들의 취향과 트렌드를 파악하는 노력을 하며 댓글에도 민감하게 반응하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 웹툰 작가들은 영상문화를 이끌어가는 ‘문화선발대’, ‘콘텐츠 실험가’, ‘스토리 생 산자’ 등의 실험적이고 도전적인 문화생산자로서의 정체성을 보였으며, 넷째, 협업의 어려움과 마감을 지 켜야 하는 고된 노동 속에서도 웹툰이 1,2년 안에 가장 ‘파워풀한(powerful) 매체’가 될 것이라며 웹툰의 성장과 달라진 웹툰 작가의 위상에 대해서 만족감을 표현했다. 데뷔까지 무보수의 불안정한 노동, 주간 연재에 대한 부담, 글과 그림을 함께 해나가야 하는 고통, 과도한 노동 시간을 감당하며 성공하면 보상을 받을 수 있다는 생각을 드러냈는데, 이는 문화산업 내 창의 노동의 특징을 보여주고 있다. 이 연구는 웹 툰 작가를 단순하게 만화를 그리는 사람이 아니라 거대한 문화산업 안에서 미디어 생산자로 보고 문화생 산자로서 조명했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그러나 웹툰 작가들이 생산과정에서 느끼는 제도적 압박이나 구조적인 문제까지는 들어가지 못한 한계가 있다. 달라지고 있는 웹툰 시장에서 웹툰 작가들의 생존전략, 플랫폼과 에이전시와의 갈등 등 구체적인 내용의 후속연구를 기대한다.
