The Five Islands in the West Sea has often been the subject of a sensitive policy debate due to their special engagement within the context of the division of Korea. Although the issues such as the bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island; sinking incident of Cheonan warship; debate over the NLL; and illegal fishing by Chinese fishing vessels, are all closely linked to the lives of the resident of the Five Islands in the West Sea, those issues have been entirely depicted as an object from the perspective of mainstream media and have not fully reflected the voices of local residents. The purpose of this article is to assess the way in which the major newspaper utilizes and features the Five Islands in Korean society by understanding how major newspapers reconstructed the Five Islands based on the particular frame they designed. As part of the research, this paper examined the editorials covering the Five Islands in the West Sea in this major newspaper for the past 16 years from 2005 to 2020 and conducted media discourse analysis. This research categorized the key frames such as 'wave,' 'sea fog,' and 'peace' which all form the discourse on the Five Islands in the West Sea. The findings of the research reveal that media discourse invoked the Five Islands in the West Sea as a means for political interest and completely objectified and symbolized the space of the Five Islands as ‘wave’ and ‘sea fog.’

‘서해5도’는 분단이라는 특수한 맥락과 맞물리면서 예민한 정책 논쟁의 대상으로 주기적으로 소환되곤 한다. 하지만 연평도 포격이나 천안함 사건, NLL 논란, 중국어선 불법조업 등 서해5도 주민들의 생명과 직결되는 사안조차 서해5도는 자신들의 목소리가 아니라 ‘중앙 일간지’의 시각 에서, 철저히 주체가 아닌 대상으로서만 존재해왔다. 이 논문은 ‘중앙 일간지’가 자신들이 설정한 특정한 프레임을 바탕으로 서해5도를 어떤 공간으로 재구성하는지 이해함으로써 한국 사회에서 서해5도를 어떤 식으로 소비하고 소환하고 있는지 살펴보는 것을 연구목표로 삼았으며, 이를 위해 2005년부터 2020년까지 16년에 걸쳐 ‘중앙 일간지’에 실린 서해5도 관련 사설을 대상으로 삼아 담론분석을 시도했다. 이를 통해 이 연구는 서해5도 담론을 구성하는 핵심 프레임을 ‘파도’ ‘해무’ ‘평화’로 구분했다. 또한 미디어 담론은 서해5도를 정파적 이해관계를 실현하기 위한 수단 으로 소환해왔으며, 서해5도라는 공간 역시 ‘파도’와 ‘해무’로 상징될 정도로 철저히 객체화시키 고 대상화하고 있다는 점도 확인할 수 있었다.
