I discuss about the arguments of utilitarianism over ethical responsibility to future generations and their problems. The theories of intergenerarational justice have difficult problems because they deal with future generations who do not exist yet. D. Parfit asks for whom we have responsibility and insists that those theories have the Non-Identity Problem. And some critics say that the utilitarian theories imply the Repugnant Conclusion or the Absurd Conclusion. I examine what viewpoints the classical utilitarianism and the average utilitarianism have and what problems they imply. P. Singer supports the preference utilitarianism and takes the debit view of preference and the view of intrinsic value that is independent of preference to solve the problems. I examine whether his theoretical attempts to solve the problems is successful.
