The purpose of this study is to shed light on the provenance, production date, icons carved in relief, and background of the Vajra bell excavated at the Yeongguksa Temple site in Seoul, which has not yet been studied in detail. The first part of the discussion involves the comparison and analysis of the style of the ritual bell and the Buddhist icons carved on it, resulting in the discovery of evidences of the origin and date of production. The analysis of the bell found that it was made in Goryeo in about the 10th century under the influence of the Vajra bells of Tang origin. The following discussion is focused on the unique Buddhist images carved on the surface of the ritual handbell, the Five Great Kings (五大明王), which were newly adopted as the guardians of Buddha’s Law. It is conjectured that the Five Great Kings were introduced for the bell to represent the guardians rather than the ideas of Esoteric Buddhism as shown by the images carved on the stone pagodas of Unified Silla. The last part of the discussion deals with the date of production and means of enshrinement for the collection of artifacts discovered together with the ritual handbell. Details of the artifacts show that they were produced between the 10th and late 12th centuries, suggesting that they were originally not intended to form a collection. The discussion is then extended to the status of Yeongguksa Temple in the 10th century and the ideological background and rituals of the Fayan School where National Preceptor Hyegeo who headed Yeongguksa Temple played a key role. According to Zixing lu (『自行錄』), a book about the practices performed by Yongming Yanshou, the third patriarch of the Fayan School, the Vajra bell was used as a ritual object used for daily ascetic practices. Finally, it is reasonable to conclude that the collection of Buddhist ritual objects discovered at the Yeongguksa Temple site shows a fine example of the practice of burying a collection of important ritual objects as enshrinement in connection with the construction of the principal dharma hall of a Buddhist temple. Therefore, one can safely conclude that the Vajra bell of the Yeongguksa Temple site was buried at the site where the temple’s central prayer hall was standing because it was not only a ritual object used by National Preceptor Hyegeo but also a priceless treasure related to the sacred relics.
