This paper examines the content and significance of Confucius and the sound of Geomungo published in the second volume of The Great East Asian Fairy Tale Series in the 1940s to confirm the possibility that the text had a relevant meaning associated with the cultural imagination of East Asia as a cultural community and recalling TransEast Asian Memories. On the surface, the Chinese fairy tale collection is characterized as an introduction to Chinese characteristics and worldview and presents an attitude of respecting China as the origin of Japanese Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist ideas. Second, considering that it was during the Pacific War, the author carefully selected and refined the stories so that small Japanese citizens could acquire statecentered thinking, loyalty ideas, and warrior spirit through Chinese fairy tales. Third, the author seems to have expected children to understand and “sympathize” with China by finding cultural similarities between Japan and China and placing what is known as the “uniqueness of Japan”, Mono-no-aware throughout the work. In conclusion, the Chinese fairy tale collection recalls the Trans East Asian memory that Japan embraced through cultural exchanges with China in the past and argues that a similar and differentiated Japanese culture was formed as a result in hopes that Japan and China will build a strong relationship.

본 논문은 1940년대 생성된 『대동아권동화총서(大東亞圈童話叢書)』의 제2권으로 간행된 중 국 동화집인 『공자님과 거문고 소리(孔子さまと琴の音)』를, 단순히 ‘대동아공영권’ 사상이 반영 되었는지 그 여부를 판단하는 단선적인 관점에서 벗어나, 트랜스 동아시아를 회고하며 문화 공동체로서의 동아시아를 상상한 현재적 의미를 지닌 텍스트으로서의 가능성을 열어두고 그 내용과 의의를 고찰하였다. 중국 동화집은 표면적으로 중국의 특성과 세계관을 소개하고자 한 특징이 있고, 일본의 유･불･도 사상의 원류로서 중국을 존중하는 태도가 엿보인다. 둘째로, 태평양전쟁기임을 감안하여, 일본의 소국민들이 중국 동화집을 통해 국가 중심적인 사고, 충 효 사상, 무사 정신을 습득하도록 작가가 신중히 이야기를 선별하고 표현을 다듬은 것이 확 인된다. 셋째로, 작가는 일본과 중국의 문화적 유사성을 강조하기 위해 세심히 원전을 선별하 고 개작했으며, 특히 모노노아와레(ものの哀れ)라는 ‘일본의 고유성’으로서 알려진 사항을 작 품 곳곳에 배치함으로써 중국에 대한 이해와 ‘공감’을 아동들에게 기대했던 것으로 보인다.
