This study examined the use of ‘ha-na-y’ from the 16th to the 19th century, targeting Korean letters exchanged between couples, mother-in-law, and son-in-law among Korean letters during the Joseon Dynasty to reveal how the honorific of ‘ha-na-y’, which had been previously discussed as having a middle level, led to modern Korean. As a result, it was estimated that the honorific of ‘ha-na-y’ in the early 16th and 17th centuries had the honorific of ‘ha-o’ in the 19th century. In addition, based on the fact that ‘ha-ap-na-y’, which newly appeared in the mid-to-late 17th century, was used with ‘ha-na-y’, it was judged that ‘ha-ap-na-y’ did not form a separate honorific level in the mid-to-late 17th century and was located in the position of ha-na-y’s honorific level. And the frequency of use of ‘ha-na-y’ decreased during the period from the mid-17th century to the late 18th century, and in the 19th century, ‘ha-na-y’ was used in the context in which ‘han-da’ was used. Therefore, based on this, this study judged that as a result of ‘ha-ap-na-y’ taking the position of ha-na-y’s level of the honorific during the 18th century, ha-na-y's honorific level, which was not combined with ‘-sap(ᄉᆞᆸ)-’ fell, and became the position of the honorific level of ‘ha-ne’ in modern Korean.

본고에서는 기존에 중간 등급의 높임성을 가진 것으로 논의되어 왔던 ‘ᄒᆞᄂᆡ’체의 높임성이 어떻게 현대 한국어로 이어지게 되었는지 그 과정을 밝히기 위해, 조선시대 한글편지 중 부부 간, 장모와 사위 간에 주고받은 한글편지를 대상으로 하여 16세기부터 19세기까지의 ‘ᄒᆞᄂᆡ’체의 사용 양상을 검토하였다. 그 결과 16세기와 17세기 전기의 ‘ᄒᆞᄂᆡ’체의 높임성이 19세기의 ‘ᄒᆞ오’체 정도의 높임성을 가진 것으로 추정하였다. 그리고 17세기 중후반 시기에 새롭게 등장한 ‘ᄒᆞᄋᆞᆸᄂᆡ’체가 ‘ᄒᆞᄂᆡ’체와 함께 사용되었던 것에 근거하여 17세기 중후반 시기에 ‘ᄒᆞᄋᆞᆸᄂᆡ’체가 따로 높임 등급을 형성하지 않고 ‘ᄒᆞᄂᆡ’체의 높임 등급 자리에 위치하였을 것으로 판단하였다. 또한 17세기 중후반 이후부터 18세기에 이르는 동안 ‘ᄒᆞᄂᆡ’체의 사용 빈도가 줄어들고 19세기에 ‘ᄒᆞᄂᆡ’체가 ‘ᄒᆞᆫ다’체가 사용되는 환경에 사용되었다. 따라서 본고에서는 18세기에 이르는 기간 동안 ‘ᄒᆞᄋᆞᆸᄂᆡ’체가 ‘ᄒᆞᄂᆡ’체의 높임 등급의 자리를 차지한 결과 그에 대한 영향으로 ‘-ᄉᆞᆸ-’이 결합하지 않은 ‘ᄒᆞᄂᆡ’체가 높임 등급의 하락을 경험하여 현대 한국어의 ‘하네’체의 높임 등급의 자리에 위치하게 된 것으로 판단하였다.
