This article aims to review the historical studies on the consonant system in Middle and Modern Korean. The ‘Middle and Modern Korean’ in this paper refers to the Korean language from the 10th century to the 19th century. The discussion about the consonant system of Middle and Modern Korean is based on the two questions on the consonant system before and around the era of Hunminjeongeum –a) can A be recognized as a consonant? b) what is the phonetic value of consonant A? In this paper, we review the previous studies comprehensively focusing on ‘the premise of the interpreting historical resources written in Hangul’, ‘the possibility of complementing the previous analyses on the historical resources’, and ‘the endpoint of a phonological change’.

본고는 ‘중세ㆍ근대 국어 자음체계 연구의 성과와 전망’을 정리하는 것을 목표로 하는 글이다. 본고의 ‘중세ㆍ근대 국어’는 10세기부터 19세기까지의 국어를 이른다. 중세ㆍ근대 국어의 자음체계에 대한 논의는 􋺷訓民正音􋺸에서 짐작되는 자음체계를 바 탕으로 그 전후시기에 대한 두 가지 물음-A는 자음(소)로 인정할 수 있는가? 둘째, 자 음(소)로 인정될 가능성이 있는 A의 음가는 무엇인가?-에 대한 답변을 통해 발전되어 왔다고 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 이들 질문들에 대한 답변에 해당하는 선행 연구들의 성과를 ‘정음 표기 해석의 전제’, ‘자료 해석의 보완 가능성’, ‘음변화 혹은 음운변화 의 종료’에 초점을 두고 종합적으로 정리해 보고, 이를 통해 향후 연구에 대한 전망도 제시해 본다.
