초록

영어

In this article, we will examine how Descartes used Stoic concepts to establish his moral philosophy. Descartes, by accepting the notion of “appropriate action(kathêkon)” does not however use it for the ideal of a life which is in accord with nature, but for a life which realizes the self foundation of human free will. To shed light on the notion of appropriate action, we will examine the notion of “what depends on us”. For the Stoics, the appropriate action is the action that is deemed capable of bringing about the best result in relation to the demands of others on me. Yet, what is more important is that by performing these actions, I am able to realize the ideal of a life which is in accord with nature. What the Stoics wanted to establish by observing the things that depend on us, was precisely these appropriate actions. Descartes accepts this theory in his moral philosophy. Yet, instead of pursuing a life according to nature, he pursues the proper use of the free will. We examine the Cartesian theory of passions to see how he understands appropriate actions. The passion of love shows how the “appropriation” of the world takes place through the intervention of the will, then the passion of desire shows how the appropriate action become the object of our will, and the passion of admiration shows us how free will is realized as a self-founding instance. In this sense, Descartes by releasing the appropriate action from the nature, bases it on the good use of free will. Lastly, we will see how the Cartesian theory of the highest good can be understood in this context.
