This study investigated and analyzed 17 animal boeundams(folktales of animals repaying favors) from Joseon-min-dam-jib (Joseon Folktales, 1930), Zhōngguó-mínjiān-gùshì-jīngdiǎn (Classic Chinese Folk Tales, 2015), and Nihon-no-mukashi-banashi (Japanese Folktales, 1930), and examined the importance of symbiosis. Folktales of animals repaying favors illuminate the friendly relationship between humans and animals. The folktale subtypes examined include helping and reward exchange, symbiotic relationships, and catastrophic endings. These East Asian folktales demonstrate a cultural consciousness that extends beyond the human-centered worldview and suggest the possibility of a mutually beneficial relationship between humans and animals. The folktales show that humans are not the center of the universe, but rather members of a global community that should live and work together. The folktales are especially relevant in light of current global concerns such as the climate crisis, and they demonstrate ecological consciousness such as compassion for animals, symbiosis between humans and animals, and catastrophes caused by human greed and mistakes.

이 연구는 동아시아의 생태설화를 고찰하려는 일환에서 시도되었으며, 『조선민담집(孫晉泰, 1930)』, 중국민간고사경전(劉守華, 2015), 일본의 민담(柳田國男, 1930)에 수록된 동물보은담을 조사ㆍ분석하고, 공생의 인문학에 대해 고찰하였다. 동물보은담은 본질적으로 인간과 야생동물의 우호적 관계가 가능한지를 탐색하는 이야기이다. 한ㆍ중ㆍ일 동물보은담의 하위 유형은 ‘선행ㆍ보은 교환형’, ‘공생관계 형’, ‘파국결말형’이 파악된다. 선행․보은 교환형은 야생동물에 대한 인간의 생명구제 및 동물의 보은행위가 일회성으로 이뤄지는 형태이다. 공생관계형은 인간과 동물의 상호이익 관계가 지 속적으로 이뤄지는 관계로 전환된 형태이다. 파국결말형은 인간의 탐욕과 과오로 인해 인간-동물의 우호적 관계가 깨지거나 재앙이 닥쳐오는 형태이다. 한ㆍ중ㆍ일 동물보은담은 야생동물에 대한 연민의식, 인간과 동물의 상조․공생의식, 인간의 탐욕ㆍ과오로 인한 파국의식 등의 생태의식을 보여준다. 한ㆍ중ㆍ일 동물보은담은 인간 중심의 세계관을 넘어서는 문화의식을 보여주며, 인간과 동물 간 교류와 공생 가능성을 제시한다. 동물보은담에서 시작되는 공생의 인문학은 위기에 처한 동물을 보고 연민의식을 느껴 “아무 조건 없이 도움을 준다 면”, “뜻밖에” 보은을 받는다는 인식에서 시작된다. 기후위기에 직면한 현 상황에 서 인간이 세계의 중심이 아니라 자연의 한 부분임을 인식하고, 이 지구 공동체에 서 인간과 자연이 함께 살아가야 한다는 것을 동아시아 동물보은담을 통해 생각하 게 된다.
