A Study on the Characteristics of GermanⅠ of the University Scholastic Ability Test in the Field of Culture and Communication

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the questions of the German I of the University Scholastic Ability Test for the last 4 years (2019-2022) in the field of culture and communication, and to find out whether the questions or the evaluation standards for the 2009 and 2015 revised curriculum reflect properly the points of view of intercultural communication as well. To this end, in this paper, first the evaluation criteria for the culture and communication domain of the German I subject were respectively examined in the two curriculum presented above, and then the questions of the culture and communication part in the German I of the University Scholastic Ability Test were analyzed. The results of the analysis are summarized as follows. First, as for the material of questions on culture, geography took the largest proportion, and life, language, and tradition were asked in the order of importance. Second, the field of questions on culture was expanded from German culture to German-speaking areas, while questions on culture that could evaluate intercultural communication ability with people from German culture were not asked.
