The purpose of this paper is to examine the specific aspects and meanings of the story about Lee Seon’s journey to find medicine in the . Lee Seon's travel story has the form of an adventure to explore palace of the southern sea king(南海龍宮), Bongnae Mountain(蓬萊山), and Cheontae Mountain(天台山), which are the another world(異界), to find a previous medicine to cure the Empress Dowager's disease. In these three places, Lee Seon experiences a little different experience, and first, in palace of the southern sea king, where he accidentally went, he learned that he had another purpose to handle this journey in addition to the task of obtaining medicine, and he had a new camp to continue his trip. In Bongnae Mountain, it turns out that the purpose behind it is to realize the identity of Lee Seon's previous life as Taeeulseon-gun, and to settle the relationship that went wrong in this world and prepare for the return to the heavenly world. Finally, Cheontae Mountain is a gateway that must be passed ahead of its return to its home country, and it is centered on testing whether human Lee Seon is eligible to return to his home country with a previous engagement. As such, the story about Lee Seon’s journey to find medicine reveals that the return of the human world and the return of the heavenly world are linked to one adventure, and that the return of the heavenly world is never irrelevant to the life of the world, and the mindset and sincerity that humans must have is important.

이 논문은 <숙향전> 후반부에 들어 있는 이선의 구약(救藥) 여행담 에 주목하여 그 구체적인 양상과 의미를 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 선의 구약 여행담은 황태후의 병을 치료할 선약(仙藥)을 구하기 위해 이 계(異界)인 남해 용궁과 봉래산, 천태산을 탐방하는 모험담의 형식을 갖 추고 있다. 이 세 장소에서 이선은 조금씩 다른 경험을 하게 되는데, 먼 저 예기치 않게 우연히 가게 된 남해 용궁에서는 약을 구하는 임무 외 에 이 여정을 반드시 본인이 감당해야 하는 또 다른 목적이 있음을 알 게 되고 여행을 계속할 새로운 동력을 얻는다. 봉래산에서는 그 이면의 목적이 바로 이선이 태을선군(太乙仙君)이라는 전생의 정체성을 깨달아 어긋났던 인연들을 현세에서 매듭짓고 천상계 복귀에 대비하는 것임이 드러난다. 마지막으로 천태산은 본국으로의 귀환을 앞두고 반드시 통과 해야 하는 관문으로서, 인간 이선이 과연 선약을 얻어 본국으로 귀환할 자격이 있는가를 시험하는 내용이 중심을 이룬다. 이처럼 이선의 구약 여행담은 하나의 모험에 인간계 귀환과 천상계 귀환이라는 두 가지 귀환이 연계되어 있으며, 천상계 귀환 역시 현세의 삶과 결코 무관한 것이 아니며 인간으로서 지녀야 하는 마음가짐과 정 성이 중요하다는 사실을 드러내고 있다.
