This study was designed to find what correlation existed between pure tone of different frequencies and emotional reactions such as anger, joy, anxiety and sorrow from hearing them. A total of 221 students from D Engineering College in Ansung City, Kyunggido participated in the study. The participants were asked to listen to six different tone sources(110Hz, 220Hz, 440Hz, 880Hz, 1760Hz, 3520Hz)-with A4 in the center-in random order to avoid the order effect. Each tone was played for 15 seconds and the participants were given 10 seconds to mark their emotional reaction to each tone. In order to enhance the reliability of the results, this study included only the 110 participants that displayed the same reactions to the same tone sources. The results showed that there was no correlation between the emotional reactions to tones and genders, but showed a correlation between emotional reactions to pure tones in 440Hz as well as the current emotional state of a person.

이 연구는 여러 다른 대역의 순음의 청취가 화남, 기쁨, 불안, 슬픔 같은 감정적 반응과 어떠한 연관성을 가질 것인가를 알아 본 것이었다. 연구자는 경기도 안성시에 소재한 D공과대학에 재학 중인 학부생 221명을 대상으로 A4음을 중심으로 하여 옥타브 대역으로 구성한 모두 6개의 음원(110Hz, 220Hz, 440Hz, 880Hz, 1760Hz, 3520Hz)을 순서효과를 배제하여 들려주었다. 각 음은 15초간 대상자에게 들려주었으며 대상자는 들려진 음으로부터 연관된 감정을 설문지에 10초 이내에 체크하도록 하였다. 연구의 신뢰를 높이기 위해 연구자는 실험음 중 한 음을 추가로 더 들려주어 그 음에 대해 동일한 반응을 보인 110명의 자료만을 분석에 사용하였다. 결과, 여러 다른 대역의 순음의 청취는 화남, 기쁨, 불안, 슬픔의 네 가지 감정반응과 연관성이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 여러 다른 대역의 순음의 청취 시 대상자의 개인 내적인 요소(성별, 현재기분)에 따라 나타난 감정반응과의 연관성을 알아본 결과 성별과는 연관이 없었으나 현재기분에 있어 440Hz 대역에서 연관성을 보였다.
