In order to understand the entire world of Jang Duk-jo's works, this paper attempted to examine the characteristics of Jang Duk-jo's women's Herstorical Novel by analyzing the “reason for planting Byeok-dong”, which enabled a new horizon of Jang Duk-jo's women's Herstorical novel after the Korean War. Jang Duk-jo found a subject in history and solved the history of women through love. At this time, he tried to create a female character who had a desperate existence for greater love, not a dependent woman's life. It focuses on the attributes (wisdom, women's virtues, and beauty) of female characters who have the genre of melodramatic historical novels but do not focus on the completion and joy of love. As an attitude of patience and perseverance, the value of an individual's existence and historical attribution are found, and it is sublimated to the cultural aesthetic area. The reason why the author was able to write historical novels that continued to be read well was because of the strong composition of the story. When the entire narrative, which flows euphemistically without relying on specific and special history, was partially or intensively mixed into a subgenre of popular fiction (history, romance, and martial arts), it was able to accommodate readers' diverse needs and be enjoyed by the public at the time.

본고는 장덕조 작품세계의 전모를 파악하기 위한 도정으로, 한국전쟁기 이후 장덕조의 작 가적 위치를 확립하고 여성적 역사소설의 새로운 지평을 가능케 한 『벽오동 심은 뜻은』의 분석을 통해 장덕조 여성역사소설의 특징을 고찰하고 이를 작가의 역사관, 국가관, 여성관으로 연결시키고자 하였다. 장덕조는 역사에서 취재거리를 찾아 여성의 역사를 사랑을 통해 풀어냄으로써, 부차적이 고 의존적인 여성의 삶이 아닌 더 큰 사랑을 위해 존재를 기투한 여성인물을 창조하고자 하였 다. 장덕조의 여성역사소설은 멜로풍 역사소설의 장르성을 가지면서도 사랑의 완성과 희열에 초점을 두지 않고 사랑을 지키고 이루어나가는 여성인물의 속성(지모(智謀), 부덕(婦德), 색 향(色香))에 방점을 찍는다. 감수와 인고의 자세로서 개체의 존재 가치와 역사적 귀속(논리와 정도)을 찾아내어 그것을 문화적인 심미영역에까지 승화시켰다. 작가가 계속해서 잘 읽히는 역사소설을 쓸 수 있었던 것은 스토리를 전개시키는 구성력이 강했기 때문이다. 구체적이고 특별한 역사에 기대지 않고 전체가 완곡하게 흘러가는 서사가 대중소설의 하위 장르(역사물, 로맨스물, 무협물)로 부분적 혹은 집중적으로 믹스될 때 독자 들의 다양한 욕구를 수용할 수 있었으며 당시의 대중들에게 큰 부담감 없이 재미있게 읽힐 수 있었다.
