Core competency education in Colleges means that the education of the college should be changed according to the social needs of the times or the shift of social paradigm. The education of core competencies includes various and new interdisciplinary educational approach and contents in curriculums. However, there is a negative view that the government oriented college structural reform is so emphasized without considering a variety of specific definitions of core competencies. It, nevertheless, is considered that core competency education should be emphasized because of the social needs of the times and only way to enhance the competences of the colleges and students. In addition, the role of the college education will be more important not pursuing simple knowledge that most of the colleges have focused but adapting to a given situation and solving the problems that we have faced in future. However, it focuses on improving individual life qualities and is considered as not competence education but interdisciplinary one after graduation of colleges. In other words, it is an education that includes lifelong and systemic education. Thus, it is said that the role of liberal arts education is important as a curriculum. The liberal arts of colleges contain academic knowledge and expertise through a variety of the subjects. Moreover, it reflects the talents required by the time through the convergent educational content and curriculum. The liberal arts education contains the components of core competencies and creates a synergy that can raise the level of liberal arts education to the next level through core competency education. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the current diversity of liberal arts education in order to increase the value of core competency education. It could be expected to increase the status of liberal arts education and the value of core competency.

대학교육에서의 핵심역량 교육은 사회의 시대적 요구에 따른 대학교육의 변화를 의미한다. 핵심역량교육은 대학교육에서의 새로운 패러다임의 변화를 의미한다. 긍정적인 시각에서 핵심역량의 교육은 앞으로의 사회에 대한 다양하고 새로운 융 복합의 교육방법과 교육과정 내용들을 담아내고 있다. 그러나 부정적인 시각에서 는 핵심역량에 대한 구체적인 정의와 핵심에 따른 구체적인 논의가 다양하게 이루 어지지 못한 상태에서 정부 주도의 대학구조개혁이라는 입장만 강조하게 되어 교 육의 획일화를 만들어 내는 시각도 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 핵심역량교육은 시대의 변화를 반영한 것으로 대학의 미래와 학생들의 미래 삶의 질을 높이는 것이라고 보아야 한다. 더욱이 앞으로의 시대는 이전의 대학이 추구하던 지식 추구의 방법이 아닌 이를 활용하고, 주어진 상황에 문제를 해결하고 적응하는데 교육의 역할이 중요해진다고 하겠다. 그러나 이러한 대학교육의 방향에서 핵심역량교육은 궁극적으로 개인의 삶의 질을 높이는데 초점 이 있다는 것이다. 단순히 대학교 졸업 후의 직업과 관련된 역량교육이 아닌 삶의 질을 고려한 융복합의 교육이 되어야 하는 것이다. 이는 전생애를 포함하는 교육이 어야 하고, 체계적으로 운영되어야 하는 것이다. 그러므로 이를 실현할 수 있는 것은 대학의 교육과정으로서 교양교육의 역할이 중요하다고 하겠다. 대학의 교양교육은 다양한 교과목을 통해 학문적 지식과 전문성을 담아내고 있 다. 또한 융복합적인 교육내용과 교육과정을 통해 그 시대가 요구하는 인재상을 반 영한다. 그러므로 교양교육은 핵심역량의 구성요소를 담아내고 있고, 핵심역량 교 육을 통해 교양교육의 수준을 한 단계 끌어 올릴 수 있는 효과를 시너지를 발생시 킨다. 그러므로 핵심역량 교육의 가치를 높이기 위해서는 현재 교양교육이 갖는 다 양함 문제에 대해서 개선할 필요가 있다. 이를 통해 교양교육의 위상을 높이고, 핵 심역량 교육의 가치를 높여서 궁극적으로 교육이 추구하는 목적과 이를 통한 인간 삶의 질을 실질적으로 높이는데 이바지 할 것으로 보인다.
