A novel The Red Sleeves is a love story between King Jungzo and a royal concubine Ewebin Sung. Her story that she rejected King Jungzo’s proposal twice is famous. I collected the data in historical documents in order to know who Ewebin Sung was. I reconstructed her reading pattern from all the books lists in The Red Sleeves. But what is the purpose of the author that a court lady is a main character? Ewebin Sung is from a court lady. A court lady should not be married except a king as her husband. A court lady should be abstinent or killed. In addition, public recognition about a court lady consists with disregard, dispise, and distrust. A court lady is insignificant. Limited is freedom and choice allowed to trifling court lady or something. Nonetheless, Ewebin lived her own life while resisting living according to the other men’s wills. She chose to live court lady’s life in order to write court lady’s writing style, transcribed Kwak-Jang two families stories, appreciated her friendship above all, rejected king’s stern proposal even twice. The author of The Red Sleeves seems to ask the same question to us by showing a character such as Ewebin who inquires what it is to live a humane life even in a very limited life of court lady in respect to freedom.

옷소매 붉은 끝동은 강미강이 쓴 제22대 정조와 후궁 의빈 성씨의 사랑 이야기이다. 그녀가 정조의 승은을 두 번이나 거절했다는 이야기는 유명하다. 그래서 의빈이 어떤 사람인지를 알고 싶었고, 그녀를 알기 위해 역 사적 사료를 탐색했다. 그러다가 문득‘왜 작가는 궁녀를 주인공으로 설정했을까?’하는 의문으로 관심사가 모아졌다. 의빈은 궁녀 출신이다. 궁녀는 왕의 여자로서 다른 누구와 결혼해서도 안 되고 금욕해야 하며 아니 면 죽음을 택해야 한다. 게다가 궁녀에 대한 인식은 매우 부정적이라서 무시, 경멸, 불신의 대상이다. 궁녀의 존재는 하찮기 그지없다. 궁녀 따위에게 허용된 자유와 선택은 매우 한정되어 있다. 이와 같은 궁녀의 제한된 운명에도 불구하고 의빈은 남의 의지에 따라 살지 않고 자기 삶을 살았다. 그녀는 궁체를 쓰고 싶어 궁녀의 삶 을 택했고, 곽장양문록을 필사했으며, 목숨 대신 우정을 선택했고, 추상같은 임금의 승은을 두 번이나 거절했 다. 옷소매 붉은 끝동의 저자는 의빈의 삶을 보여줌으로써 우리에게도 인간다운 삶을 사는 게 무얼까 탐색하고 또 의빈처럼 제한된 범위 내에서나마 자신의 자유와 선택을 존중하라고 권하는 것 같다.
