This purpose of the present paper is to investigate the meaning and function of “TE SIMAU MAE-NI” in Modern Japanese. I fiest demonstrate that the meaning of “～”TE SIMAU MAE-NI” is as follews. (1) ～“TE SIMAU MAE-NI” emphasizes that the action is complete regardless of the type of verb (indicating volitional action or non-volitional action). From a semantic point of view, ～“TE SIMAU MAE-NI” express a strong felling, such as the nuance of irrevocable result. (2) Negative form like “TE SIMAWANAI MAE-NI” is ungrammatical form. The reason is why “TE SIMAU MAE-NI” emphasizes the completion of an action. Negative form “TE SIMAWANAI MAE-NI” is difficult to consider selective relationships such as imperfect(Meanings of multiple unfinished steps, etc.).

본 논문에서는 현대일본어의 「～てしまう前に」節을 대상으로 그 의미와 기능에 관해 고찰하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. (1) 「～てしまう前に」는 의지동사, 무의지동사에 관계없이 동작이 완료되는 것 을 강조하며, 의미적으로는 ‘완료된 이후에는 이전 상태로 되돌릴 수 없다’ 는 의 미가 된다. (2) 「～てしまう前に」는 「～てしまわない前に」와 같은 부정형이 성립하지 않는 다. 그 이유는 「～てしまう」는 동작의 ‘완료’를 강조하므로 부정형 「～てしまわな い」로 표현했을 때 ‘미완료(완료되지 않은 여러 단계 등)’와 같은 선택적인 관계를 고려하기 어렵기 때문이다.
