This article reviewed the characteristics of the mentally disabled person’s description based on Foucault’s concept of self-consideration for Lidan and Jeong Jieum’s essays. Due to the nature of mental disorders in which disability facts are invisible, the pain experienced by the parties is complex. This article examines the socio-cultural significance of female mentally disabled writers and deals with readers’ reading attitudes. According to Foucault, self-care refers to the physical, mental, and social care and practice of an individual. He referred to writing as an important means of self-consider. The essay of the mentally disabled faithfully follows this context of self-consideration. It deals with the need to take care of one’s body and mind, and reveals socio-cultural biases by reflecting on the social relationships surrounding one. Furthermore, it reveals the writing of mutual communication as a practical care, because both mentally disabled and non-disabled people form a community of understanding and empathy as readers in the SNS space that confesses their disabilities and delivers messages of comfort and encouragement. The limitations of this article are that the narrative characteristics can be simplified due to the lack of target text, and the inability to deal more actively with the specificity of female freelance writers, which will be supplemented by future research.

이 글은 리단과 정지음의 에세이를 대상으로 정신장애인의 에세이 서술에 나타난 특성을 푸코의 ‘자기배려’ 개념을 중심으로 검토하였다. 장애 사실이 비가시적인 정신장애의 특성상 당사자가 경험하는 고통은 복합적이다. 이 글은 여성 정신장애인 작가들의 글을 살펴봄으로써 사회문화적 의의를 살펴보고, 독자들의 독서태도를 다루었다. 푸코에 따르면 자기배려는 개인의 신체적이고 정신적이며 사회적인 돌봄과 실천을 의미한다. 그는 글쓰기를 자기배려의 중요한 수단으로 언급한 바있다. 정신장애인의 에세이는 이러한 자기배려의 맥락을 충실히 따른다. 자기 신체와 정신을 돌보는 것의 필요성을 다루며, 자신을 둘러싼 사회적 관계를 성찰함으로써 사회문화적 편견을 드러낸다. 더 나아가 실천적인 돌봄으로서 상호소통의 글쓰기를 드러내는데, 자신의 장애를 고백하며 위로와 격려의 메시지를 전달하는 SNS 공간에서 정신장애인과 비장애인 모두 독자로서 이해와 공감의 공동체를 형성하게 되기 때문이다. 대상 텍스트가 풍부하지 않아 서술 특성을 단순화할 수 있다는 점, 여성 프리랜서 작가들의 특수성을 좀 더 적극적으로 다루지 못했다는 점 등이 이 글의 한계로, 추후 연구로 보완하고자 한다.
