Among the numerous films made in wartime Japan, there were ‘entertainment films’ that did not find much propaganda messages, and existing studies have not paid much attention on these. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how entertainment films were accepted and recognized in Japan during the wartime period. Existing studies have judged that watching entertainment movies during wartime was a kind of ‘resistance’ of the common people against the bureaucracy-led control of movies. In order to critically examine this research trend, this thesis examined whether entertainment was unconditionally hostile and excluded, and how the act of watching and making entertainment movies was perceived in wartime Japan. At that time, the scope of expression was reduced due to the strengthening of censorship and control, but on the other hand, there were various movements and booms to expand the national entertainment. This study found that there were many discourses which entertainment and national policy were to be harmonized rather than opposed to each other. In the space of wartime Japan, entertainment and entertainment films had their own reasons for existence.

전시기 일본에서 만들어진 수많은 영화 중에는 프로파간다적 메시지를 그다지 찾을수 없는 ‘오락영화’가 존재하고, 이러한 영화들에 대해서 기존 연구가 그다지 주목해오지 않았다. 이 논문은 전시기 일본에 있어서 오락영화는 어떤 식으로 받아들여졌고 인식되었는지를 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존 연구에는 전시기에 오락영화를 보는 행위는 관료주도의 영화통제에 대한 서민들의 일종의 ‘저항’이었다고 판단하는 것이 있다. 본논문은 이러한 연구경향을 비판적으로 보기 위하여, 전시기 일본에 있어 오락은 무조건적으로 적대시되고 배제되었는지, 그리고 오락영화를 보는 행위와 만드는 행위가 당시에 어떻게 인식되었는지를 살펴보았다. 당시 검열과 통제의 강화로 표현 범위가 줄어든면이 있지만, 다른 한쪽에서는 국민오락의 확충을 위한 다양한 움직임과 활황이 있었다. 본고는 대중에 강력한 힘을 발휘할 수 있는 영화의 경우 오락적 기능도 주목을 받았기 때문에, 오락과 국책이 서로 대립했다기 보다는 조화되길 바라는 의견이 많았음을 찾아냈다. 전시기 일본이라는 공간에서 오락, 그리고 오락영화는 그 나름의 존재 이유를 가지고있었던 것이다.

戦時期日本で作られた数多くの映画の中には、プロパガンダ的なメッセージが含ま れていないような｢娯楽映画｣が存在し、これらの映画については、従来の研究があま り注目してこなかった。この論文は戦時期日本において、娯楽映画はどのように受け 入れられ、認識されたかを究明することを目的とする。従来の研究では、戦時期日本 において娯楽映画を見る行為は、官僚主導の映画統制に対する庶民たちの一種の｢抵 抗｣だったと見なす傾向が見られる。本論文は、このような研究傾向を批判的に見るために、戦時期日本において娯楽は敵対視され排除されたか、そして、娯楽映画を見 る行為と作る行為が、どのように認識されたかを調べた。当時、検閲と統制の強化で 表現範囲が縮まった側面はあるが、他方では国民娯楽の拡充のための様々な動きと活 況があったことも事実である。本稿は大衆に強力な力を発揮できる映画の場合、娯楽 的機能も注目を集めたため、娯楽と国策が互いに対立したというよりは、調和するこ とが望ましいという意見が多かったことを見つけだした。戦時期日本という空間にお いて、娯楽、そして、娯楽映画はそれなりの存在理由を持っていたのである。
