This paper delves into types of narratives about women playing musical instruments in the ancient East Asian literature. Though women under a patriarchal system led their lives in silence, they discovered their melodies and rhythms within the literary world and subtly rendered the songs about their joys and sorrows, nostalgia, eagerness and hope for the afterlife. In the society where the voices of women were suppressed, musical instruments - as they helped women express their identities- were channels for romantic relationships and sometimes even were seduction techniques. Occasions of women reaching the stage of unity with musical instruments were shown as they expressed emotions controlled under a patriarchal system. Moreover, they played heavenly sounds through the pursuit of pure artistry and the achievement of transcendence. It is undeniable that the images of women playing musical instruments are evidence of coercion. Yet, by using a musical instrument as a catalyst for interaction, a way to achieve unity with music through empathy and an adventure to their afterlife, they composed their own masterpiecestheir lives.

본고는 한중일 고전문학 속에 보이는 여성의 악기연주에 관하여 살펴보고 자 하였다. 가부장 체제의 구획된 틀 속에서, 무음(無音)의 삶을 살았던 여성 들이었지만 문학의 세계에서는 자신만의 선율과 리듬을 발견하여 삶의 애환 과 그리움, 간절함과 내세를 향한 희구(希求)를 은은하게 연주하고 있었다. 먼저 여성이 자신의 목소리를 낼 수 없는 사회에서 악기는 자신을 드러내기 위한 ‘매개(媒介)’로서 작용하여 사랑하는 임을 만나는 소통창구가 되기도 하 였으나, 때로는 과감한 유혹의 통로가 되기도 하였다. 한편 시대의 한계 상 황 속에서 억눌렸던 감정을 악기연주를 통해 발산하면서 여성과 악기가 ‘합 일(合一)’의 경지에 이르는 모습도 발견할 수 있었다. 나아가 순수한 예술성 의 추구와 신의 세계에 이르는 ‘초월(超越)’의 모습으로 천상의 소리를 연주 하기도 하였다. 따라서 한중일 고전문학 속에 등장하는 여성들의 악기연주는 당시 가부장 사회의 틀 속에서 강요된 행위라는 측면도 부정할 수 없으나, 그 틈새를 통해 여성들은 타인과의 만남의 매개(媒介)로, 감정이입을 통한 합일(合一)로, 예술과 신의 경지로 들어서게 되는 초월(超越)이라는 다양한 모습으로 자신들의 인생을 연주하고 있었던 것이다.
