When employees work for a long time in a company, both efficiency of labor and compensation increase in general. Therefore tenure of employees affects firm value. The effect of employees tenure on firm value could vary with the industry to which a firm belongs. We focus on industry concentration especially. We investigate whether the effect of employee tenure on firm value varies with industry concentration. We measure industry concentration by using Hirshman-Herfindahl Index and measure firm value by using Tobin’s Q. First, we find that industry concentration has a significant negative relation with employee tenure. The result implies that importance of labor efficiency is smaller in highly concentrated industry than in less concentrated industry. Second, we find that negative effect of employ tenure is moderated in highly concentrated industry. While efficiency is more important factor in less concentrated industry, inefficient firms could exist in highly concentrated industry. Thus, this result suggests that efficiency due to long employee tenure affects more positively firm value in highly concentrated industry. This study extends the study of employee tenure by providing the empirical evidence that the effect of employee tenure on firm value varies with industry concentration. The finding also provides practical implications to the managers for human resource management and strategic decision makings. Last, this study also gives implications to market investors regarding the effect of both industry concentration and employee tenure on firm value.

종업원의 근속연수가 길어지면 일반적으로 생산 효율성과 임금이 모두 증가하며, 이러한 점은 기 업가치에 영향을 미친다. 종업원의 근속연수가 기업가치에 미치는 영향은 기업이 속한 산업 환경에 따라 달라질 수 있기 때문에 본 연구는 산업 환경의 속성 중 하나인 산업집중도에 따라 종업원의 근속연수가 기업가치에 미치는 영향이 달라지는지 분석하였다. 허시만-허핀달 지수를 이용하여 산업집중도를 측정하였으며, 기업가치는 토빈큐를 사용하여 측정 하였다. 우선적으로 산업집중도가 종업원의 근속연수에 미치는 영향을 분석하였는데, 산업집중도가 높을수록 종업원의 근속연수가 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 산업집중도가 낮을 때, 즉 경쟁이 치열할 때엔 근속연수가 긴 근로자의 효율적인 생산능력이 더 중요시되지만, 산업집중도가 높을 때 엔 그 중요도가 떨어져서 나타난 결과로 해석된다. 다음으로 산업집중도에 따라 종업원의 근속연수 가 기업가치에 미치는 영향에 대하여 분석한 결과, 평균적으로 종업원의 근속연수가 길수록 기업가 치가 감소하지만 산업집중도가 높을 때에는 종업원의 근속연수와 기업가치에 미치는 부정적인 영향 이 완화되는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 산업집중도가 높을 때에 산업 전반에 생산효율성이 높지 않은 가 운데, 근속연수가 긴 종업원의 높은 생산효율성이 산업집중도가 높을 때 상대적으로 기업가치에 더 긍정적인 영향을 미치기 때문에 나타난 결과로 보인다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 공헌점이 있다. 우선, 종업원의 근속연수가 기업가치에 미치는 영향이 산 업집중도에 따라 달라질 수 있다는 실증결과를 제공하였다는 점에서 기존의 연구에 차별성을 가지 며 보탬이 된다. 다음으로 이러한 실증결과는 산업내 경쟁이 치열하지 않을 때 근속연수가 기업가 치에 미치는 긍정적인 영향이 상대적으로 증가할 수 있음을 보임으로써 기업의 인사 및 전략 등에 관련된 실무자들에게 시사점을 제공할 수 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 산업 집중도와 근속연수를 동시에 고려하였을 때 기업가치에 미치는 영향에 대한 실증결과를 제시함으로 써 투자자들에게 중요한 시사점을 제공한다.
