In general, Western painting refers to perspective view and chiaroscuro. These two styles, which differ from traditional Eastern paintings, have been studied with emphasis on formalities. However, this style is deeply related to colonialism, which began in the Renaissance. The culture of the Renaissance, a mixture of Hellenism and Hebrism, heightened European self-esteem, and this cultural superiority appeared to be Christian European centralism, justifying the rule of other peoples. This paper proves the correlation through the fact that European-centeredness is inherent in the perspective view method and that the light and dark law emphasizes Christian concepts. Paradoxically, the discovery of the New World and the missionary work of the Jesuits promoted meeting with other peoples and understanding of other cultures. As a result, in recognizing the world, it emphasized relativity and universality rather than absoluteness. If relativity was expressed by Cubism, universality was manifested by abstraction. Therefore, the development of modern painting can be viewed as a process of decolonization.

일반적으로 서양화법은 투시도법과 명암법을 말한다. 동양의 전통 회화와 다른 이 두 양식은 형식적인 면이 강조되어 연구됐다. 그러나 이 양식은 르네상스기부터 시 작된 식민주의와 깊은 연관이 있다. 르네상스기 헬레니즘과 헤브라이즘을 혼합하여 만 든 문화는 유럽인들의 자긍심을 높여주었으며, 이러한 문화적 우월감은 기독교적 유럽 중심주의로 나타나 타민족의 지배를 정당화했다. 본고는 투시도법에 유럽중심주의가 내재되어 있으며 명암법이 기독교 관념을 강조하고 있음을 통해 상관관계를 입증한다. 역설적이게도 신대륙의 발견 및 예수회의 포교활동은 타민족과의 만남과 다른 문화에 대한 이해를 촉진시켰다. 그 결과 세계를 인식하는 데 있어서 절대성보다 상대성과 보 편성을 강조하게 되었다. 상대성은 입체주의에 의해 표현되었다면, 보편성은 추상화에 의해 나타났다. 따라서 근대 회화의 전개 양상은 탈식민주의 과정으로 바라볼 수 있다.
