The purpose of this study is to examine the aspects of ‘Life’ found in Park Kyung-ni’s full-length novel, The Market and the Battlefield, with Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche’s theories. The reason is that the pursuit of the active life of the subject noticeably found in the work forms a similar context to the concept of ‘Will to Power’ that Nietzsche came up with. If so, the narrative structure about ‘Life’ in The Market and the Battlefield can be largely divided into two types. First, this study looks into the condition in which life becomes degraded into something material according to the ‘ideology’ deviating from natural attributes. In other words, it is the problem arising from the hollowness of war and the pursuit of false truth. Also, it is the reality of murder recklessly committed in the absence of human dignity. Second, this study investigates the condition in which life is led dynamically according to ‘liveliness’, one of the natural attributes, which is to say that the true meaning of life is produced in the market which is full of vitality. Also, it is the attitude of realizing an individual’s behavior towards preservation and contradictory reality. Through this contrast, it says we should recover the true value of life ultimately not through the negative of life but through the positive of life, What we have to point out here is that as we can see it from the title, The Market and the Battlefield, we can understand the meaning of life with dichotomous division between ‘the market’ and ‘the battlefield’. In other words, it is necessary to refuse non-life in the cruelties of ‘the battlefield’ and accept life that is lively in ‘the market’. Consequently, what the writer, Park Kyung-ni, emphasizes is that ‘Life’ is superior to either the establishment or contrast of ideologies, and even in any extreme conditions, ‘Active Will’ is more important than anything else in human life.

이 논문은 박경리의 장편소설 『시장과 전장』에 나타난 ‘생명(生命)’의 양상을 니체의 이론을 통해 규명해 보고자 한다. 이 작품에서 두드러지는 주체의 능동적 생명에 대한 추구는, 니체가 말한 ‘힘에의 의지’라는 개념과 유사한 맥락을 형성하 고 있기 때문이다. 그렇다면 『시장과 전장』의 ‘생명’에 대한 서사 구조는 크게 두 가지로 구별해 볼 수 있다. 먼저 자연적 속성을 벗어난 ‘이념(理念)’에 따라 생명이 물질적 대상으로 전락하는 상황을 살펴본다. 즉 전쟁의 무의미성과 잘못된 진리에 대한 추종이 갖는 문제점이다. 그리고 인간의 존엄성이 부재하는 가운데 무차별적으로 이루어지는 죽음의 현실이다. 다음으로 자연적 속성인 ‘생기(生氣)’ 에 따라 생명이 역동적으로 이루어지는 상황을 살펴본다. 즉 활력이 넘치는 시장 에서 진실된 삶의 의미를 산출한다. 그리고 개인의 보존을 위한 행위와 모순된 현실을 인식하는 태도이다. 이러한 대비를 통해서, 궁극적으로 삶의 부정이 아닌 ‘긍정’을 통해 생명의 진정한 가치를 회복해야 한다는 것이다. 여기서 지적해야 할 점은, 『시장과 전장』의 제목에서 보듯이 ‘시장(市場)’과 ‘전장(戰場)’의 이분법적 구분을 통해 생명의 의미를 이해할 수 있다. 다시 말해 ‘전장’의 참혹함 속에서 비생명성을 거부하고, ‘시장’의 생동감 있는 생명성을 수 용해야 한다는 것이다. 그러므로 작가 박경리가 강조하는 것은 사상의 성립과 대 립보다 ‘생명’이 우위에 있으며, 어떠한 극한의 상황에서도 인간의 삶에서 ‘능동적 의지’가 중요하다는 것을 말하고 있는 것이다.
