Research on the literary trajectory of Shim Yeon-soo, the colonial Korean poet resident abroad in Manchuria, has been confined to the framework of the "selling rice before harvest" style, or has been making illogical leaps that do not conform to the empirical data, simply glorifying Shim as a national(ist)/resistant/anti-Japanese poet to become a fait accompli. At this juncture, the publication of The Complete Bibliography of Shim Yeon-soo’s Biographical, Literary, and Historical Data in ten volumes by the Shim Yeon-soo Memorial Society, Gangneung Cultural Center, and Gangwon-do People's Daily was expected to end the unnecessary, long-lasting wasteful controversy. Through an analysis of the historical materials in The Complete Bibliography, this paper has reached a comprehensive grasp of the identities of "Saewannim" and "Nobuko/Shinja," which have not been discussed until today. The Complete Bibliography has serious limitations in following preexisting scholarly amateurism. It includes unreliable data based on scattered memories, testimonies, and rumors from family members and relatives as shown in "Yoon Dong-ju Newspaper Scrap"; damages to the original biographical data as in "Lost July 8th Diary"; the editor's lack of professionalism in such cases as "Tagor"; and the absence and misreading of various historical facts. Most of all, there is no person in charge of compilation for the publication. These limitations will impede further research efforts. For these reasons, the final conclusion of this paper based on a philological review of The Complete Bibliography is as follows. Some literary researchers and "enthusiasts" who blindly try to understand Shim Yeon-soo are interfering with reaching a full understanding of his literature. Or, to put it another way: Since the publication of the The Complete Bibliography led by the Shim Yeon-soo Memorial Society, Gangneung Cultural Center, and the Gangwon-do People's Daily, research on Shim Yeon-soo’s literature has gone back to its starting point.

심연수 문학에 관한 연구는 여전히 입도선매식 논의의 틀에서 벗어나지 못했거나, 시인을 민족/저항/반일 문인으로 기정사실화함으로써 실증 자료와 부합하지 않는 논리적 비약을 범하고 있다. 이러한 시점에서 <심연수기념사업회와 강릉문 화원과 강원도민일보사>가 주도한 『심연수 문학사료 전집』 발간은 기존의 불필요 하고 소모적인 논쟁을 종결할 것으로 기대되었다. 실제로 본고는 『사료 전집』의 분석을 통해 그간에 논의가 전무하였던 ‘새완님’과 ‘노부코/신자’의 정체를 온전 히 파악했다. 그럼에도 『사료 전집』은 기존의 문제점을 답습하는 심각한 한계를 노정한다. 즉 “윤동주 신문스크랩”에서 보이듯 가족 및 친지들의 기억과 증언과 소문에 의존 한 불합리한 자료 제시, “사라진 7월 8일 일기문”처럼 원전의 훼손, “타고르” 관련 부분과 같은 편집자의 비전문성, 역사적 사실의 이해부족으로 인한 무수한 오기와 오독, 무엇보다도 편찬 책임자의 부재 등은 궁극적으로 후속 학문의 발전을 저해 하는 요소로 작용한다. 이러한 이유들에서, 『사료 전집』의 서지학적 검토를 수행한 본고의 최종 결론 은 이렇다. 일부의 문학 연구자들과 재만 시인 심연수를 맹목적으로 이해하려는 ‘추종자들’이 오히려, 심연수 문학의 온전한 이해에 도달하는 것을 훼방하고 있다. 다시, 이렇게 말해보아도 좋겠다. <심연수기념사업회와 강릉문화원과 강원도민일 보>가 주도한 『사료 전집』 간행 이후, 심연수 문학연구는 다시 원점으로 회귀하고 있다.
