This discussion criticizes the current , which explains ‘“yeol(열)/ryeol (렬)”,’ and ‘“yul(율)/ryul(률)”’ by the rule of initial sound, even though ‘“yeol(열)/ryeol(렬)”’ and ‘“yul (율)/ryul(률)”’ are not related to the place of the initial sound. This discussion insists on unifying these notations into ‘“yeol(열)”’ and “yul(율)”.’ This is because the most natural way to explain that the same letter is pronounced in various ways such as [yeol(열)/yul(율)], [nyeol (녈)/nyul(뉼)], and [ryeol(렬)/rul(률),] is to set one of the pronunciations as the underlying form and view the rest as variants. If these notations are unified into “yeol(열)” and “yul(율),” the pronunciation of [nyeol(녈)/nyul(뉼)] and [ryeol(렬)/ryul(률)] can be explained by “’n”’ insertion. In addition, if the notations of “yeol(열)/ryeol(렬),” “yul(율)/ryul(률)” are unified into ‘“yeol(열)”’ and ‘“yul(율)’,” there are a few things which should be changed in the dictionary. This papper also looked at the parts that need to be corrected in the dictionary related to ‘“yeol(열)/ryeol (렬)’” and ‘“yul(율)/ryul(률)’.” In this paper, we will also look at what needs to be corrected in the dictionary.

본 논의는 ‘열/렬’과 ‘율/률’이 두음의 자리와 관련이 없는데도 불구하고 두음법칙으로 설명하고 있는 현행 <한글 맞춤법>을 비판하고, 이들의 표 기를 ‘열’과 ‘율’로 통일하기를 주장한다. 동일한 글자가 [열/율], [녈/뉼], [렬/ 률] 등 다양하게 발음되는 것을 설명하는 가장 자연스러운 방법은 발음 중 하나를 대표형으로 설정하고 나머지를 변이형으로 보는 것이기 때문 이다. 이들의 표기를 ‘열’과 ‘율’로 통일한다면 [녈/뉼], [렬/룰]의 발음은 ‘ㄴ’ 첨가로 설명될 수 있다. 이에 더해, ‘열/렬’과 ‘율/률’의 표기를 ‘열’과 ‘율’로 통일한다면 사전에서도 ‘렬’과 ‘률’은 표기를 ‘열’과 ‘율’로 고쳐야 하며, 사 전에 등재되어 있지 않은 ‘열’과 ‘율’의 의미 중 일부는 사전에 등재될 필 요가 있다는 사실을 살펴볼 것이다.
