The purpose of this study was to determine whether the estrus could be predicted based on the size change of the vulva of red fox (Vuples vulpes). In 20 females, the length and width of the vulva were measured by intervals of 2 to 5 days for 45 days until mating was confirmed, and the surface area was calculated from the length and width, and two of them were measured for sex hormones estradiol and progesterone. As the esults, the surface area of the vulva started to increase 6 days before mating and increased about twice on the day of mating. Estradiol and progesterone started to increase 10 days and 3.5 days before mating, and the maximum level has been reached 3.5 days before mating and on the day of mating, respectively. The results indicate that the change of the vulva size during the estrus reflected the change in sex hormones. Thus, change in vulva size can be used as a non-invasive method to predict estrus in female red fox.

암컷 붉은여우(Vulpes vulpes)의 외음부 크기 측정으로 발정기를 예측할 수 있는지 여부를 확인하고자 하였다. 암컷 20개체를 대상으 로 45일간 2-5일 간격으로 교미가 확인될 때까지 외음부의 길이, 너비를 측정하여 표면적을 계산하였고 그 중 2개체는 성호르몬인 에스트라 디올(estradiol) 과 프로게스테론(progesterone)을 측정하였다. 연구 결과 외음부 표면적은 교미 6일 전부터 증가하기 시작하여 교미일에 약 2배 정도 증가하였고, 에스트라디올은 교미 10일 전부터 증가하기 시작하여 교미 3.5일 전에 최대치임을 확인하였다. 프로게스테론은 교미 3.5일 전 부터 증가하기 시작하여 교미 당일 최대치를 보였다. 여우 발정기에 외음부 크기의 변화는 성호르몬 변화상을 반영하였다. 그러므로 암컷 여우의 발정기를 예측하기 위한 비침습적 방법으로 활용 할 수 있다.
