Performing Arts Policy and Ballet in Korea
초록
영어
This research aimed to chronologically examine the change of ballet in South Korea in relation to the art policy of the central government, on the premise that the government of a country functions as an actor that affects arts practices. To undertake this research, I conducted a comprehensive literature review on arts policy and ballet practices in the South Korean society from the liberation to the Park Geun-hye government. As a result, it has been disclosed that the early South Korean government initially administered ballet which was deemed unethical, and then included it as the subject of its policy. This change paved the way for the development of ballet in South Korea. Since 1987, the South Korean government has assured the autonomy of arts and gradually increased its support for arts. Accordingly, ballet has also showed its quantitative and qualitative growth. Despite the burgeoning ballet scene, the fact that the government fund for ballet is concentrated in national and public companies is considered a problem that needs to be solved for the well-balanced and sustainable development of ballet in South Korea.
