The purpose of this study is to review the trends of Japanese troops in Jeolla-province, especially the northwestern region of Jeolla-province, which was a main battle area in the early Japanese Invasions of Joseon in 1597~1598, and the response of the Joseon military. As it became difficult to achieve the goal through negotiations, Japan tried to take control of the southern areas of Joseon by combats. Japanese Army took control of Jeolla areas, such as Namwon and Jeonju and headed north toward Hanseong. However, the Japanese Troops, who were not able to go north at southern Gyeonggi Province due to the deterrence of the Joseon and Ming Military, gathered in Jeongeup in mid-September to hold a military conference[井邑軍 議]. As a result of this conference, the Japanese Troops decided to take full control of the Jeolla-province. However, due to the deterrence of the Joseon army in Jeolla-province, the Japanese army took control of only a part of Jeolla-province. In particular, it was confirmed that the Japanese military failed to take control of the region due to the activities of Righteous soldiers in Buan and Gochang etc. Until now, the trends of the Joseon and Japanese forces in the northwestern part of Jeolla-province were not well known, but it was confirmed that the damage of Joseon was very light through analysis of historical documents. This proves that the Japanese invasion of the region was not successful.

본 연구는 정유재란 초기 주요 전투 지역이었던 전라도, 특히 서북부 지역 일본군의 동향과 조선군의 대응 양상을 시기별로 정리 검토하는 것을 목적으 로 한다. 협상을 통한 전쟁 목표 달성이 어려워지자 일본은 전쟁을 통해 조선의 남부 지역을 장악하려 하였다. 그 일환으로 일본군은 남원, 전주 등 전 라도 지역을 장악하고 한성을 향해 북상하였다. 그러나 조선군과 명군의 저 지로 경기 남부에서 더 이상 북상하지 못한 일본군은 9월 중순 정읍에 모여 군사회의를 개최하였다. 이 회의의 결과 전라도 지역에 대한 전면적인 장악 을 결정하였다. 그러나 전라도 각 지역 조선군의 저지로 일본군은 전라도 일 부 지역밖에 장악하지 못하였고 그 기간도 한 달에 지나지 않았다. 특히 부 안, 고창 등 전라도 서북 지역은 지역 의병의 활동으로 일본군이 이 지역 장 악에 실패하였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그동안 전라도 서북 지역의 조선군과 일본군의 동향에 대해서는 잘 알려지지 않았으나 『동국신속삼각행실도』 등의 자료 분석을 통해 조선의 피해가 매우 경미하였음을 확인하였다. 이는 이 지 역에 대한 일본군의 침공이 성공적이지 못하였음을 반증한다. 아울러 이 지 역 의병의 활동은 지역 방어에 그치지 않고 남하하는 일본군을 추격하는 등 매우 적극적이었다.
