The purpose of this study is to examine how the philosophical idea of Ego’ has developed in Korean modern philosophy. Specifically, this article will analyze the idea of Ego shown in Lee Don-Hwa's Philosophy of New Human (1931). Lee Don-hwa's theory of Ego has a distinct feature. According to him, Ego has two aspects. In other words, he divides Ego into Big Ego (Ego as a whole universe) and Small Ego (the individual Ego). In this article, I will reconstruct the way Lee Don-Hwa explains the relationship between Big Ego and Small Ego. In particular, this article will focus on the philosophical concept of ‘intuition’. Lee Don-Hwa utilizes Descartes' Cogito proposition in explaining the meaning of Ego, and self-consciousness through intuition occupies an important place in his theory of Ego. Furthermore, according to Lee Don-Hwa, intuition plays an important role when individual subjects try to transcend themselves. Therefore, I will analyze how Lee Don-hwa uses the concept of intuition to explain the relationship between Big Ego and Small Ego.

이 연구의 목적은 근현대 철학의 주요 주제인 자아론이 한국 현대철학에서 어떻게 전개되었는지 살펴보는 것이다. 구체적으로 이 글에서는 이돈화의 『신인철학』(1931)에 나타난 자아 관념을 분석할 것이다. 이돈화의 자아론은 뚜렷한 특징을 갖는데 그것은 자아를 이중적으로 이해한다는 것, 즉 자아를 대아(우주 전체로서의 자아)와 소아(개별적 자아)로 구분한다는 것이다. 이 글에서 나는 대아와 소아의 의미와 관계에 대한 이돈화의 설명방식을 재구성할 것이다. 특히 이 글에서 중요하게 다루어질 개념은 ‘직각’이다. 이돈화는 자아를 설명하는 과정에서 데카르트의 코기토 명제를 적극적으로 활용하며, 직각을 통한 자아의식이 그의 자아론에서 중요한 위치를 차지한다. 그런데 이돈화의 관점에 따르면 직각은 개별적 주체가자기를 초월하려 할 때도 중요한 역할을 한다. 나는 이돈화가 소아와 대아의 관계를 해명할 때 직각이라는 개념을 어떻게 사용하는지 분석할 것이다.
