This study aimed to clarify that essay instruction is a main effective tool to build a subject rather than just a means of college entrance examination. For the goal, the study inspected how that instruction was currently putting its priority on college admission tests. And this research looked into ethics of the ancient times and Michel Foucault’s discussions of the ethics in his late period. Through this process, the study could extract and hereby suggest four conditions that essay-making education should meet to become a significant way of subject establishment. The four conditions are as follows. The first is technology(technē) and truth, the second, persuasion and discipline, the third, leisure and practice, and the fourth is educator’s requests. In describing the four requirements in detail, this study appropriately turned to some of the ancient ethics, particularly discourses by Plato and Aristotle. Moreover, the research developed the description with reference to the above mentioned later discussions by Foucault. Here, this study restricted the reference to the philosopher’s ways of subject establishment, ‘speaking and listening’ and ‘reading and writing’. And, the study treated those ways within the frameworks of ancient ethics.

우리는 본 논문을 통하여 논술교육이 주체를 구축하는 교육의 주효 한 장치임을 말하고자 한다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 주체를 구축하기 위한 논술교육의 조건을 네 가지로 추렴하여 제안하고자 한다. 네 가 지 조건은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기술(technē)과 진실, 둘째, 설득과 교육, 셋째, 에토스(ethos)와 여가, 넷째, 교육자의 요청이 그것이다. 본 논문 에서는 해당 조건들을 상술하기 위하여 고대 윤리를 차용하는데, 주로 플라톤(Platon)의 담론과 아리스토텔레스(Aristoteles)의 담론을 사용한 다. 이에 더하여 후기 푸코(M. Foucault)의 논의 또한 참고로 하고 있 는데, 푸코의 논의는 다음의 사실에서 유용하다. 먼저 주체는 ‘말하기와 듣기, 읽기와 쓰기’의 집적을 통해서 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 구축되어 간 다는 것을 포착한 사람이 바로 푸코라는 점이며, 그것이 고대의 윤리 프레임 내에서 주장되고 실행되었다는 것을 발견한 것도 푸코라는 점 이다.
