Religion is formed within society, but it also drives society. What is religion and society, and how do they influence each other? In this article, I would like to reconsider the old topic of relationship between religion and society in depth. Through this, I would like to clarify the phenomenon and nature of religion’s social power or influence. The discussion will proceed in the following three directions. First, this article examines the aspects of misunderstanding about the concept of religion and attempts an appropriate conceptual understanding of it. While distinguishing between religion as a organization and religion as a religious value on one side and connecting them on the other, this article tries to understand about the nature of the point where religion and society meet. Second, it shows that the process of promoting quantitative expansion of religion as an organization and the characteristics of society that is being strengthened as private economic activities are recognized as public values are linked to each other. Third, it reveals that religion is a part of society but also a source of hypersocial power that reshapes society, and that uniqueness of religion is secured when it leads to win-win changes that accept others within oneself.

종교는 사회 안에서 발생하지만, 사회를 견인하기도 한다. 종교와 사회란 무엇이며, 이들은 서로 어떤 영향을 주고받는가. 이 글에서는 종교와 사회의 관계라는 오래된 주제에 대해 심층적 으로 재고찰하고자 한다. 이를 통해 종교의 사회적 영향력의 현상과 본질을 밝혀보고자 한다. 이를 위해 다음 세 가지 방향으로 논의를 전개해나갈 것이다. 첫째, ‘종교’의 개념에 대한 오해의 양상을 살펴보고, 적절한 개념적 이해를 시도한다. ‘종단 으로서의 종교’와 ‘종교적 가치로서의 종교’를 한편에서는 구분하고 다른 한편에서는 연결시키 면서, 종교와 사회가 만나는 지점의 성격에 대해 알아본다. 둘째, 종단으로서의 종교가 양적 확장을 도모하는 과정과, 사적 경제활동이 공적 가치로 인 정받으며 더욱 강화되고 있는 사회의 특징이, 서로 연동되어 있다는 사실을 드러낸다. 셋째, 종교는 사회의 일부이면서도 사회를 재형성시키는 초사회적 힘의 출처이기도 하다는 사실, 특히 자기비움에 입각한 타자 살림, 즉 상생적 변화로 나타날 때 종교의 고유성이 확보된 다는 사실을 드러내보고자 한다.
