This thesis was written to lay the groundwork for discussions on Asian ecological literature through foreigners' affection for Lee Gyu-bo, the great master of Korean literature history. From the standpoint of Korean literature, it is also necessary to check the perception of others, that is, non-Koreans, and Westerners who lived in Korea first. Therefore, we looked at the case of Korean classical science from the perspective of Westerners in Korea. James Scott Gale (1863-1937), a Canadian, first came to Korea in 1888 as a missionary at the YMCA and stayed until 1927. While serving as a religious person for 40 years, Gale translated Korean studies and introduced them overseas, and he highly appreciated Lee Gyu-bo and devoted himself to studying his Chinese poems. Richard Rutt (1925-2011) was a Roman Catholic priest in England and worked in Korea for 20 years from 1954 to 1974. It can be said that Rutt was influenced by Gale, and similarity can be found even by looking at the scope of Korean studies. Rut also paid attention to Lee Gyu-bo, translated and introduced his prose several times, and introduced temporary translations to various gaze books. Kevin O'Rourke (Korean masterpiece, 1940-2020) is a priest of St. Colomban Outer Mission in Ireland and has lived in Korea since 1964. O'Rourke is widely known as a translator of Korean literature, and he showed a special affection for Lee Gyu-bo. O'Rourke is expressing his position of seeing Gale as the first generation of Korean literature translation, Rutt as the second generation, and himself as the third generation, and mutual influence in Lee Kyu-bo's affection for him. Lee Gyu-bo's poetry world is rich in foundations that can be read for various ecological reasons. Anyone who has read Lee Gyu-bo's poem for a lifetime will be able to fully grasp what the poem aims for. Gale and O'Rourke have no longer been read by many Koreans in Korean society since the 20th century, so they have tried to restore things that have disappeared from their memories through other languages. Coincidentally, it seems that they need more time to think about how to understand that the works they chose are in contact with ecological reasons. Looking forward to the future, I would like to conclude the rambling presentation.

이 글은 이른 시기부터 이규보를 선호해온 서양인 번역가의 계보를 살펴보고, 그들이 간행한 이규보 영역시 양상을 생태적 관점에서 읽어보고자 하였다. 이규보 의 시는 생태적 관점으로 읽을 수 있는 내용이 풍부한데 영역된 시 또한 마찬가지 이다. 그 어느 때 보다 생태적 사유와 실천이 강조되는 오늘날, 이규보 문학은 국 내외 독자들에게 널리 읽힐 수 있는 텍스트로, 이 방면의 좋은 사례가 될 수 있다 고 생각한다. 이규보 문학을 선호한 서양인 번역가로 세 사람을 들 수 있다. 먼저 제임스 게일 (James Scarth Gale)은 캐나다인으로 1888년 YMCA 선교사로 처음 한국에 와서 1927년까지 머물렀다. 게일은 종교인으로 복무하면서도 한국학을 번역, 해 외에 소개하고 연구한 공적으로 높이 평가받고 있는 인물이다. 특히 이규보를 매 우 높이 평가하고 그의 한시를 영역하는 데에도 심혈을 기울였다. 리차드 러트 (Richard Rutt)는 영국 로만 가톨릭 신부로서 1954년부터 1974년까지 20년 간 한국에서 활동하였다. 러트 역시 종교인으로 활약하면서 한국문학을 번역하여 해외에 소개하는 데 힘을 기울였는데 게일의 영향을 받아 이규보 주요 저작을 번역하였다. 케빈 오록(Kevin O’Rourke)은 아일랜드의 성 콜롬반 외방선교회 신 부로 1964년 이래 한국에 살다 2020년 10월 타계하였다. 그는 한국문학 번역에 전 생애를 바쳤는데 게일과 러트를 이어 이규보의 한시를 가장 많이 번역하였다. 이규보의 시세계는 다양하고 생태적 사유로 읽을 수 있는 바탕이 풍부하다. 그 것은 이규보의 시를 읽어보면 파악할 수 있다. 그렇다고 이규보의 시가 모두 그런 것은 아닌데, 특히 게일과 오록이 선택하여 번역한 이규보의 시는 대체로 자연친 화적이고 오늘날 생태적 사유와 연결지을 수 있는 작품들이 많다. 그들이 의도하 지 않았다 할지라도 영역시 선정과 간행에서 이러한 경향성을 읽을 수 있다는 점 은 생태적 관점에서 의미를 부여할 수 있을 것이다. 그래서 향후 생태문학 논의의 한 가능성으로 다룰 필요가 있다고 본다.
