[Purpose] This study was conducted to explore the process of lowering the average handicap of amateur golfers. [Method] The study participants were 7 amateur single golf handicappers. The data collected through the in-depth interview were analyzed according to the grounded theory analysis procedure(Strauss & Corbin, 1997). [Result] According to the research findings, a grounded theory paradigm model composed the core phenomenon (stagnant growth in golf handicap), causal relationship (the necessity to reduce handicap), context (the inherent difficulty in golf, the failure to engage in exercise due to role expectations), intervening conditions (the accumulated golf experience, the significant others' positive impact), interaction strategies (the meaningful changes in training, enhancing on golf rounding management competency, the goal setting, the obsession with golf), and outcomes (achieving target score, the continuous effort to reduce handicap) was derived. The research participants were growing to the level of advanced golfers by repeating this process.

[목적] 본 연구의 목적은 아마추어 골퍼의 핸디캡 정체 현상과 극복 과정을 밝히는 것이다. [방법] 연구목적 달성을 위해 아마추어 싱글 골프 핸디캐퍼 7명을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였으며, 수집된 자료는 근거이론 분석 절차 (Strauss & Corbin, 1997)에 따라 분석되었다. [결과 및 요약] 자료분석 결과, 아마추어 골퍼들의 `핸디캡 정체'(중심 현상)에 영향을 미치는 인과적 상황은 `핸디캡 감축의 필요성'이었으며, `골프의 내재된 어려움'과 `역할기대로 인 한 운동몰입의 어려움'이 맥락으로 작용하였다. 상호작용 전략은 `트레이닝의 변화', `매니지먼트 역량 강화', `목표 설정', `골프의 생활화'로 나타났으며, 모두 연구참여자의 `축적된 골프경험'과 `주요 타자의 긍정적 영향'이라는 중재 적 조건에 의해 수립되었다. 상호작용 전략 수행에 따른 결과는 `목표 핸디캡 달성'과 `핸디캡 감축 노력 지속'으로 드러났다. 아마추어 골퍼들은 목표 핸디캡 달성 이후에도 핸디캡 정체와 극복 과정을 반복해가며 상급자 수준으로 성장하고 있었다.
