The purpose of this study is to investigate the individual performing arts of East Asia in Korea, China, and Japan, and to find the commonalities of the body images expressed through the body images of actors in the performing arts. In this study, the representative traditional performances of East Asia, such as Chinese nahui and peking opera, Japanese Noh and Gyogeng, and Korean mask play (mask dance), puppet gaksinoreum, and pansori, are briefly introduced to illuminate the body image in East Asian performing arts. Through this study, we investigated the performing arts of Korea, China, and Japan, and found that the body images commonly expressed have similarities. The totality of the play means that the actor is united with the cosmic vitality through his body. It was found that in art that has been orthodox for a long time, people's body images are similar or show the same shape. It was also confirmed that the body images of people in the play, dance, and old tomb murals show too much similarity. Stylistic re-creation can be interpreted as being formed from an attitude not to lose the universal order of life and human ethics rather than imitation of facts or criticism of reality. Today, it is judged that it is more appropriate to use the expression “performance art” rather than the expression “play”. In this way, I tried to reveal that the body image was transmitted as a similar form in East Asian art and developed into a wide field of performing arts today. After that, follow-up studies that materialize and verify the shape of the body image should follow.

본 연구는 한･중･일 동아시아의 개별 공연예술에 대해 알아보고 공연예술 속 연기자들의 신체 이미지를 통해 표현되는 신체 이미지 의 공통점을 찾아보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구에서는 동아시 아의 대표적인 전승 연희인 중국의 나희･경극, 일본의 노･교겡, 한 국의 탈놀이(탈춤)･꼭두각시놀음･판소리를 간략하게 소개하면서 동 아시아 공연예술에 나타난 신체 이미지를 조명하도록 한다. 본 연구를 통해 한･중･일의 공연예술을 알아보고 표현된 신체 이미지가 공통적인 유사성을 갖고 있다는 것을 알게 되었다. 연극의 총체성은 배우가 자신의 온몸을 매개로 우주적인 생동력과 합일되 는 것을 의미한다. 오랜 기간 정통적으로 내려온 예술 속에서 사람 들의 신체 이미지의 모습이 비슷하거나 동일한 모습을 보여주고 있 다. 더 나아가 연극, 무용 그리고 오래된 고분벽화 속 사람들의 신 체 이미지가 너무나 유사성을 보여준다는 점도 확인할 수 있었다. 양식적 재창조는 사실의 모방이나 현실의 비판보다는 삶의 보편적 인 질서와 인간적인 윤리성을 상실하지 않으려는 자세에서 빚어진 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 오늘날 연극이란 표현보다는 공연예술이란 표현을 사용하는 것이 적절할 것으로 판단된다. 본 고에서는 이렇 듯 신체 이미지가 동아시아 예술 속에서 비슷한 형태의 모습으로 전승되고 오늘날 공연예술이라는 넓은 영역으로 발전되었다는 것을 밝히려고 했다. 이후 신체 이미지의 모습을 구체화하고 고증하는 후속 연구가 뒤따라야 할 것이다.
