Based on The Art of 9/11 an exhibition curated by critic Arthur Danto in 2005, this paper inquires how Danto’s well-known theory about ‘the end of art’ can be reinterpreted in the current socio-political milieu and therein explores art’s new status quo and formal validity in this age of global disaster. For this inquiry, Danto’s theoretical spectrum will be broken into two parts: first, the earlier ‘end-of-art’ period, roughly between 1980 and 2000 in which Danto discussed art’s ontological crisis and its historical end through his half analytic and half Hegelian methods, and second, the later ‘art-of-the end’ period, after 2000 in which he emphasized art’s subjective yet universal aspect and its formal inertia in pursue of Kantian sublimity. This paper then delves into their theoretical polarity in order to see how Danto’s earlier ending story with post-narrative art, transfiguration of commonplace, indiscernibility, embodiment of meaning, etc. reveals its true face in culture’s another dead-end caused by 9/11. Through this, the paper aims to crystalize the formal peculiarity and reflective, remedial value of ‘the art-of-the end’ that has not been fully discussed in Danto study.

본 논문은 미국의 미학자이자 미술비평가인 아서 단토가 2005년 기획한 전시 《9/11의 예술》을 바탕으로 ‘예술의 종말’에 관한 그의 유명한 이론이 문화적 패러다임의 종말을 암시하는 현실 정치의 상황 속에서 어떻게 재해석될 수 있는지 분석해 본다. 이를 위해 논자는 단토의 이론을전기와 후기로 나눌 것이다. 전기는 주로 1980부터 2000년 사이에 이루어진 예술의 분석적 정의와 헤겔적 역사주의에 입각한 ‘예술 종말론’의 시기이다. 후기는 2000년 이후, 칸트에 대한 재해석을 통해 종말 이후 예술의 주관적 보편성과 숭고한 비형식적 특성을 강조하는 ‘종말 예술론’ 의 시기로 볼 수 있다. 본 논문은 단토의 이론에 내재하는 예술 종말과 종말 예술의 유의미한 대비를 통해 예술 종말론의 논점들–포스트 내러티브적 예술, 일상의 변용, 지각적 식별불가능성, 의미의 육화 등이 9/11과 같은 대재난에 의해 야기된 동시대 문화의 종말적 상황 속에서 어떻게 재해석 될 수 있는지 살펴본다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 단토의 예술 종말론이 간과한 종말 예술의 형식적 특수성을 규정할 것이며, 이러한 종말적 형식들이 어떻게 재난적 (동)시대성을 반영하고 치유해 가는지 논증할 것이다.
