The Marshall Islands, officially Republic of the Marshall Islands, is a country in the central pacific Ocean, which became a Japanese mandate after World War I. During the Pacific War, about 20,000 Japanese soldiers lost their lives on these islands. Tomigoro Sato, a member of the Japanese Navy’s 64th Guard unit assigned to Wotje Island kept a diary for two years as he struggled with hunger as the supply lines were cut. The documentary, “Tarinae,” contains various memories forgotten by post-war Japan by featuring a journey of his son who followed his father’s diary and took a trip to visit where his father spent the last moments of his life. This paper focuses on how the memories of Imperial Japan in the Marshall Islands depicted in the film, “Tarinae,” and a book of the writings from Tomigoro Sato’s diary, “The Marshall Islands, my father’s battlefield: a journey of historical practice around a Japanese soldier’s diary,” are passed onto post-war generations as historical practices. The detailed descriptions of Tomigoro Sato’s diary and Joseon poems left on Wotje Island reveal the existence of Korean soldiers and civilian workers in the military during the Pacific War. Although many things are still unknown, ongoing field investigations and interviews with local residents are revealing new facts about the existence of many Korean soldiers and civilian workers in the military. This paper looks at how the memories of Imperial Japan and the Pacific War, once forgotten by post-war Japan, are still going on.

제1차 세계대전 후 일본의 위임 통치령이 된 중부 태평양의 마셜제도. 아시아･태평양 전쟁 중, 이 땅에서 약 2만 명의 일본 병사가 목숨을 잃었다. 해군 제64 경비대원으로 마셜제도 웟 제 섬에 배속된 사토 도미고로는 보급로를 끊기고 굶주림과 싸운 2년간 일기를 계속 썼다. 아 버지 도미고로의 일기를 단서로 위령 여행을 떠나는 아들을 쫓은 다큐멘터리 영화 타리나이는 전후 일본이 망각한 다양한 기억을 담는다. 본고에서는 타리나이와 동시에 사토 도미고로 일기를 전문 수록한 서적 마셜, 아버지의 전쟁터: 어느 일본 병사의 일기를 둘러싼 역사실천에서 가시화된 마셜제도에서의 제국 일본의 기억이 어떤 형태로 드러나 전후 세대에 역사실천으로 계승되고 있는가 하는 점에 주목한다. 사토 도미고로 일기의 구체적인 기술이나 웟제 섬에 남겨진 조선시(朝鮮詩)를 통해 전시 당시 동원된 조선인 군인･군속의 존재가 드러난다. 아직 밝혀지지 않은 것이 많은 조선인 군 인･군속의 존재는 현지에서의 계속된 조사와 주민들에 대한 인터뷰를 통해 새로운 사실이 밝 혀지고 있다. 전후 일본이 망각한 제국 일본과 전쟁의 기억이, 현재 진행형의 기억으로 말해지 는 것을 고찰한다.

第一次世界大戦後、日本の委任統治領となった中部太平洋のマーシャル諸島。アジア太平洋 戦争中、この地で約2万人の日本兵が命を落とした。海軍第64警備隊員としてマーシャル諸島の ウォッチェ島に配属された佐藤冨五郎は、補給路を絶たれ、飢えと闘った二年間、日記を書き続け た。父・冨五郎の日記を手がかりに、慰霊の旅に出る息子を追ったドキュメンタリー映画 タリナイ は、戦後日本が忘却したさまざまな記憶を映し出す。 本稿では、タリナイと同時に佐藤冨五郎日記を全文収録した書籍 マーシャル、父の戦場― ―ある日本兵の日記をめぐる歴史実践で可視化されたマーシャル諸島における帝国日本の記憶が どのような形で浮かび上がり、戦後世代に歴史実践として継承されているかという点に着目する。 佐藤冨五郎日記の具体的な記述やウォッチェ島に残された朝鮮詩から、戦時下に動員された朝 鮮人軍人軍属の存在が浮かび上がる。未だ明らかになっていないことが多い朝鮮人軍人軍属の存 在は、現地での継続的な調査と住民への聞き取りによって、新たな事実が明らかになりつつある。 戦後の日本が忘却した帝国日本と戦争の記憶が、現在進行形の記憶として語り／語られることを考 察する。
