A Study on the Language Activities of ‘intelligent non employed’ through Meiji Novels : Based on Soseki's “Sorekara” from the Perspective of Vocabulary Expression
초록
영어
The purpose of this study is to confirm the actual state of language activities from a specific class called the 'intelligent non employed' (Daisuke). This class was newly created along with the modernization of Japan within various Japanese studies. The linguistic characteristic that distinguishes the knowledgeable class from that of the general employee is especially seen in vocabulary expressions. The frequency and proportion of Chinese words used by ‘the intelligent non employed’ (Daisuke) are of a higher proportion than that of the general employee (kadono), and among them, the frequency and proportion of Atype Chinese words made after the modern period are higher than usual. Among Atype's Chinese words, we see linguistic characteristics that frequently use terminology that belong to specialized fields, such as economics, philosophy, botany, law, and medicine. Therefore, the actual state of language activities of ‘intelligent non employed’, a class of the late Meiji intellectual class, could be confirmed through the work of Soseki's Sorekara.
