The purpose of this article is to critically reflect on two arguments about Donghak. Specifically, it examines the religious and ideological meanings inherent in Donghak based on the discussion of religious philosophy. The contents of this study were as follows. First, the religious meaning of Donghak was found in Suun’s religious experience. Religious experience was a message of salvation for universal human beings. It was also a process of elevating the existing self and sublimating it into a more advanced self. It was a process of recovering a lost or forgotten self. This was the process of overcoming human finitude. This was the reason why Donghak was not only a theoretical thought, but also had the character of a practical faith. Second, the ideological significance of Donghak was the fact that it deconstructed the existing ruling ideology with the ideology of the new era. It was also a positive ideology that made society brighter by developing the recovery of individual nature into a problem of universal recovery of human nature.

이 글의 목적은 동학을 평가하는 상반된 두 가지 주장에 대한 담론의 장을 여는 것이다. 구체적으로는 종교철학적인 논의를 바탕으로 하여 동학에 내재한 신앙적 의미와 이념적 의미를 살펴본다. 이 연구의 내용은 다음과 같았다. 첫째, 동학의 신앙적 의미는 수운의 종교체험에서 단초를 찾았다. 종교체험은 보편적 인간들에게 구원의 메시지였다. 또한 기존의 자신을 상승시켜 보다 진보된 자신으로 승화시키는 과정의 체험이었다. 잃어버린 혹은 잊어버린 자기 자신을 회복하는 과정이었다. 이것은 인간의 유한성을 극복하는 과정이며, 동학이 단지 이론적인 사상에만 머무르는 것이 아니라 신앙, 즉 실천적인 신앙의 성격을 지니게 되는 이유였다. 둘째, 동학의 이념적 의미는 낡은 구시대적 정신에 새로운 미래사회로 발전하는 시대적 이념으로 기존의 지배 이데올로기를 해체했다는 사실이었다. 또한 개인의 본성 회복 문제를 단지 개인의 문제에만 국한하지 않고, 보편적 인간의 본성 회복이라는 경지로 승화하여 사회를 밝게 하는 긍정의 가치로서의 이념이었다.
