West Side Story, one of the representative works of Broadway Musicals, was recently remade by Steven Spielberg after half a century. The film actively reflects the changes in the American sociopolitical landscape of the post-Trump era. Racial confrontations intensified in the Trump years are contemplated through the young latinos’ drama of conflicts and feuds counter the white boys. In that respect, this article discusses Spielberg’s perception of the world and the dilemma of the latino community through the analysis of the movie. For that, we introduce Trumpism which is a new merge of 21st century nativism into an ideology. It’s characteristic reproduction of hatred towards foreigners and immigrants is embodied in the way the white society treats the Puerto Ricans in the film and the movie explores the identity issues of this community. In addition, we analyse the narrative strategy of the director who put more highlights on the ‘puertorriquenidad’ compared to the movie made in 1961. Lastly we reexamine the potentiality of the hybridity and of the bilingualism represented in the film and discuss the cinematic imaginations that can go beyond the Trumpism.

브로드웨이의 대표적 뮤지컬 <웨스트 사이드 스토리>는 1961년 영화화된 이후 반세기만 에 스티븐 스필버그 감독에 의해 리메이크되었다. 이 작품은 최근 미국에서 나타나는 정치사회 지 형의 변화를 적극적으로 투영한다. 특히, 트럼프의 등장 이후 격화된 인종적 대립을 백인과 라티노 청년들이 벌이는 분쟁과 갈등의 드라마를 통해 성찰한다. 본 논문은 이 영화를 분석하면서 현재의 미국 사회에 관한 스필버그의 세계인식과 라티노 공동체의 딜레마를 논의한다. 이를 위해 21세기 의 민족주의가 이데올로기의 형태로 결합한 트럼프주의를 소개한다. 트럼프주의로 나타난 외국인 이나 이민자에 대한 혐오의 재생산은 푸에르토리코인을 통해 형상화되는데, 영화는 적대적인 상황 에 놓인 이 공동체의 정체성 문제를 탐색한다. 또한, 1961년의 영화와 비교하여 푸에르토리코성 (puertorriquenidad)을 보다 선명하게 부각하고 있는 스필버그의 서사 전략을 분석할 것이다. 마 지막으로, 본 논문은 이 영화가 형상화하는 혼종성과 이중언어주의의 가능성을 탐색하면서, 트럼 프주의를 넘어서는 영화적 상상력에 관해 논의하고자 한다.
