My entry point in analyzing the complexity of new economy, society, and culture in the making with the information technology revolution is to go beyond the technological determinism according to which technology determines society. On this theoretical context, I try to understand the recently published writings of Manuel Castells, especially the theoretical constructions. For him, neither does society script the course of technological change, since many factors, including individual inventiveness and entrepreneurialism, intervene in the process of scientific discovery, technological innovation, and social applications, so that the final outcome depends on a complex pattern of interaction. His concept of informational mode of development which is beyond the productionistic paradigm considers production, experience, and power as basic elements of “socialization (Vergesellschaftung)", and tries to analyse the historical transformation of the concepts of time and space.

새로운 정보테크놀로지의 출현은 사회변동에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가? 이 문제에 대해서 필자는 일단 테크놀로지에 의해 사회변동이 결정된다고 판단하는 이른바 기술결정주의를 넘어서야 한다는 입장에서 출발한다. 기술결정주의는 결정주의의 하나인 한에서, 결정주의의 인식론 그 자체가 오늘날에는 더 이상의 타당성과 설득력을 얻고 있다고 보기 힘들기 때문이다. 이 맥락에서 필자는 여기에서 마누엘 까스텔(Manuel Castells)의 최근 저술들에 주목할 것이다. 그는 최근 저술들에서 기술결정주의를 부정하는 입장에서 출발하고 있으면서도 매우 포괄적인 이론적 접근을 하고 있기 때문이다. 물론 그는 매우 풍부하고 다양한 경험적 자료들을 분석하고 있지만 필자의 관심은 그의 정보사회이론에 있다. 까스텔은 초기에 프랑스 구조주의에 빠져 있었으나 점차 구조주의를 벗어나 이제 완전히 구조주의와는 상반된 입장으로 기울어져 있는 것 같다. 그의 ‘정보적 발전양식’론은 생산주의 패러다임을 넘어서면서도 생산, 경험, 권력을 고려하는 매우 복합적인 이론구성을 보여주고 있다. 또한 그는 정보매체 내재적 분석에만 국한하지 않고 매체 외재적 분석으로 나아가고 있다.
