The aricle is to discuss how the Christian traditional understanding of ‘prayer’ can be re-interpreted in view of contemporary (modern-postmodern) language-experience-directed thoughts, and what its theological implications are. There is not a definite turningpoint borderline between modernity and postmodernity, but the two, inter-mixed, coexist, mutually illuminating each other. ‘Contemporary’ in this study indicates such a mixed and fluid state. The author views ‘language’ and ‘experience’ as the core keywords of contemporary thoughts. The matrix for the so-called ‘linguistic turn’ is the modern empiricism and structuralism. The postmodern inherits the materialistic immanentism and subjectivism (self-consciousness) from the modern, and turns them into the problematics of language (sign) and particularity of individuals. The problems of language and experience for modernity was a clue to the rational interpretations for the world and humanity, but they for postmodernity become a pretext for overturn and deconstruction. No matter which side, the contemporary lies on the time-spirit dominated by discourses on language and experience. And this time-trend basically tends to stand against Christianity. The strategy of the study is to use the discourse on ‘language’ and ‘experience.’ which is used to tear down the Christian worldview, conversely as a means for defending this and rather proving its excellency. This strategy, of course. is never new in Christian theological traditions. Borrowing the time-honored wisdom from the tradition, the study particularly deals with the matter of ‘prayer.’ Prayer is, while being possibly regarded as a universal phenomenon of humanity, the authuor presupposes, particularly the core praxis for the Christian spirituality and theology. Nevertheless, ‘prayer’ is also a subject that cannot avoid negatively being understood in the contemporary discourse on language and experience. Paying attention to the fact that prayer has to do with the problems of language and experience above all, the article shows that the characteristics of Christian prayer deconstructs the contemporary discourse of language and experience, and exposes its contradiction and limitation. The aim is, of course, not to attack the contemporary thoughts as such, but to demonstrate that the uniqueness and survival power of the Christian prayer, emerged against the contemporary thoughts, can newly answer the contemporary questions.

본고는 기독교전통의 ‘기도’ 이해가 현대(근대-탈근대)사상의 언어 및 경험 지향적 관점 속에서 어떻게 재해석될 수 있으며, 그 신학적 의의가 무엇인지를 논의한다. 근 대와 탈근대 사이에는 명확한 전환적 경계가 있는 것이 아니라 뒤섞여 상관적으로 서 로를 조명하며 공존한다. 본고에서 ‘현대’란 이 모든 혼합적이고 유동적인 상태를 지 시한다. 필자는 현대사상의 핵심 키워드를 ‘언어’와 ‘경험’으로 본다. 이른바 탈근대주 의의 ‘언어적 전환’의 모태는 근대적 경험주의와 구조주의이다. 탈근대는 근대로부터 유물론적 내재주의와 주관(의식)주의를 전수받았고, 이를 언어(기호)와 개별자의 특수 성 문제로 치환하였다. 언어와 경험의 문제는 근대성에서 세계와 인간에 대한 합리적 해석의 단서였으나, 탈근대성에서는 전복과 해체의 빌미가 된다. 어느 쪽이든 현대는 언어와 경험에 관한 담론이 지배하는 사조에 놓여 있다. 그리고 이 사조는 기본적으 로 반기독교적 방향을 지향한다. 본고의 전략은 현대사상이 기독교적 세계관을 허무는 방향으로 사용하는, ‘언어’와 ‘경험’의 담론을 역으로 기독교적 전통을 방어하고 오히려 그 탁월성을 증명하는 수단으로 사용하겠다는 것이다. 물론 이 전략은 기독교신학 전통에서 결코 새로운 것이 아니다. 본고는 이 오랜 전통의 지혜를 빌려, 특히 ‘기도’의 문제를 다룬다. 기도는 인 류의 보편적 현상이라고 할 수 있으나, 특별히 기독교적 영성과 신학을 위한 핵심적 프락시스라고 필자는 전제한다. 그럼에도 기도는 현대적 언어와 경험의 담론에서 무 엇보다 부정적으로 이해될 수밖에 없는 주제이기도 하다. 본고는 기도가 무엇보다 언 어와 경험의 문제와 관련된다는 점에 주목하여, 기도의 특성이 언어와 경험에 관한 현대적 논의를 해체하고 그 모순과 한계를 폭로한다는 것을 보여주려 한다. 물론 목 적은 현대사조를 공격하는 것 자체가 아니라, 현대사조의 배경으로부터 드러나는 기 독교적 기도 이해가 갖는 독특성과 생존력이 현대적 질문에 새롭게 답할 수 있다는 점을 보여 주는 데 있다
