This article aims to analyze the historical, theological, and liturgical aspects of Chumo Yesik, memorial ceremonies in the Korean Protestant church, and to present alternative and exemplary services. The ceremony conducted by Yi Muyong, a member of Chungdong First Methodist Church, on his mother's anniversary is the oldest Korean Protestant Church memorial ceremony on historical record. Since then, most Korean denominations have incorporated Chumo Yesik, or memorial ceremonies in their worship books, revising and supplementing content over time. The Korean culture of family-centered memorial is a meaningful topic within inculturation, but there has been a lack of noteworthy developments in its practice throughout its Christian history, and the question remains as to whether patriarchal ceremonies premised on large families are suitable for modern society. Previous studies on memorial ceremonies mainly introduced and emphasized their value, with particular attention to the ceremonies’ historical and theological significance. For example, churches and denominations would hold memorial ceremonies on anniversaries or holidays, and scholarship has identified ideas embedded in these practices such as the harmony and faith of family members, the emptiness of life, and hope for heaven without notable differentiation of their meaning among practitioners. However, the ceremonies’ reflection of patriarchal society in their narrow strictures and the practical misunderstandings invited by exclusive or too-rigid language may fall short of complementing the cosmic and universal church. All Saints’ Day, as a created tradition honoring the martyrs of the early church, provides a theological and liturgical perspective on memorial ceremonies. Efforts should be made to incorporate important theological themes such as the remembering of the dead, comfort and hope in God, and hospitality for the community. The active participation of family members or church members should also be considered. The perception of these practices as universal church ceremonies needs to be fostered. Preachers should take a pastoral approach and proclaim the gospel through the ceremonies. Once these efforts are in place, memorial ceremonies that are both timely and harmonious with the nature of worship can be achieved and spread throughout the Korean church.

이 논문은 한국개신교 추모예식을 역사적, 신학적, 예전적인 측면에서 분석하고 대 안을 제시하는데 목적을 갖는다. 정동제일감리교회의 성도 이무영이 그의 모친의 기 일에 드렸던 예식(1897)이 가장 오래된 한국개신교회 추모예식의 역사적 자료다. 이후 대부분의 교단들이 추모예식을 예배예식서에 포함하였고 여러 차례 개정을 통해 내용 을 수정보완하였다. 가족 중심의 추모문화는 예전토착화의 측면에서 의미가 있으나 이후 주목할 만한 발전이 부족했고 대가족을 전제로 한 가부장적 예식이 현대사회에 적합한지에 대한 의문이 남는다. 추모예식에 대한 선행연구들은 추모예식이 갖고 있는 역사적, 신학적 의미에 주목 하며 주로 그 가치를 소개했다. 교회와 교단들이 제시하는 추모예식의 사례들은 고인 의 기일이나 명절에 드리는 것들인데 가족 구성원의 화합과 믿음의 계승, 인생의 덧 없음과 천국의 소망들이 담겨있고 내용상 유의미한 차이는 없다. 다만 우주적, 보편적 교회보다 가정만을 대상으로 한 편협성과 가부장적 사회를 반영한 경직성이 아쉽고, 차별적이거나 배타적인 표현도 발견된다. 초대교회에서 순교자를 기리던 전통이 생겨나고 만성절로 정착한 사례는 추모예식에 신학적, 예전적 안목을 제공한다. 죽음의 직면, 공동의 기억, 위로와 소망, 환대와 같은 중요한 신학적 주제를 담아내기 위한 노력이 있어야 할 것이다. 가족구성원 혹 은 교회에 속한 교우들의 능동적인 참여도 고려해야 한다. 보편적 교회의 예식이라는 인식의 확대도 필요하다. 설교에 있어서 복음의 선포와 함께 목양적 접근도 요구된다. 더욱 시의적절하고 예배의 본질에도 부합하는 추모예식이 다양한 방식으로 만들어지 고 보급되기를 기대한다.
