This paper examines the cognitive process through which the dimensional adjective “hukai” representing a measure of physical space expands its meaning. The prototype(basic) meaning of “hukai” represents a measure of physical space, but its meaning has also expanded as the object of description has changed into various non-space usages from abstract space to abstract concepts. Looking at the expansion process of the meaning of “hukai,” its semantic characteristics of ‘quantitative nature’ and ‘spatial position’ have become major factors in expanding the meaning. The semantic characteristic of ‘quantitative nature’ has expanded to mean that ② ‘the degree of density and concentration is large’ and ⑤ ‘the degree is severe.’ On the other hand, the semantic characteristic of ‘spatial location’ has expanded to mean that ③ ‘a lot of time has elapsed,’ ④ ‘the distance is close,’ and ⑥ ‘a deep place invisible from the surface.’ The expansion via these semantic characteristics was confirmed to have been made based on the human’s experience of the image of ‘container’ and the frame of ‘place.’

本研究は物理的な空間の尺度を表す次元形容詞｢深い｣がいかなる認知プロセスで意味が拡張していくのかを考察した。 ｢深い｣のプロトタイプ的意味は物理的な空間の尺度を表すが、抽象的な空間から抽象的な概念に至るまで多様な非空間的な用法で意味が拡張してきた。｢深い｣の意味拡張の過程をみると、｢深い｣が持つ｢量的な性質｣と｢空間的な位置｣という意味特性(素性)が意味拡張において重要な要因になっている。｢量的な性質｣の意味特性は｢密度･濃度の量が大きい｣ことを表す別義②と、｢程度が甚だしい｣の意味を表す別義⑤へ拡張した。一方、｢空間的な意味｣という意味特徴は｢時間が経過してたけなわになる｣の別義③、｢距離が近い｣を表す別義④、｢奥底の核心に近い｣を表す別義⑥へ拡張した。このような意味特性による拡張は｢容器｣のイメージと｢場所｣フレームという人間の経験的なことを基盤にしていることを確認した。

본고는 물리적 공간의 척도를 나타내는 차원형용사‘hukai’가 어떠한 인지프로세스를통해 의미가 확장되는지를 고찰하였다. ‘hukai’의 프로토타입 의미(기본의)는 물리적 공간의 척도를 나타내지만, 추상적인 공간에서 추상적인 개념에 이르기까지 다양한 비공간(非空間) 용법으로 형용 대상이 변화함에 따라 그 의미도 확장되었다. ‘hukai’의 의미확장 과정을 보면 ‘hukai’가 가진 ‘양(量)적 성질’과 ‘공간적 위치’라는의미특성이 의미확장에 있어서 주요한 요인이 되고 있다. ‘양적 성질’의 의미특성은 ‘밀도･농도의 양(量)의 정도가 큼’을 나타내는 의미②와 ‘정도가 심함’을 나타내는 의미⑤로 확장되었다. 한편, ‘공간적 위치’의 의미특성은 ‘시간이 경과해 한창에 이름’의 의미③, ‘거리가 밀접함’을 나타내는 의미④, ‘표면에서 보이지 않은 깊은 곳’을 나타내는 의미⑥으로 확장되었다. 이러한 의미특성에 의한 확장은 ‘용기(容器)’이미지와 ‘장소’프레임이라는 인간의 경험적 기반에 기인하여 이루어지고 있는 것을 확인하였다.
