This study was to investigate how childhood trauma affects the criminal behavior of early adult repeat offenders. For the research method, the Narrative Inquiry method of Connelly and Clandinin (2000) was used, and among the inmates, three persons who scored 6 or higher in the ACE test were selected. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews in an open interview method, and classified and analyzed according to the subject of two research questions. The themes that repeatedly emerged from the impact of childhood trauma on crime were “can’t move”, “float”, “live every day at random”, “immerse in excitement”, “out of control”, and 15 subcategories were derived accordingly. As the key theme words for the outlook about their own lives, three were derived: “low self-esteem and rationalization”, “desire for connection”, and “hope for ordinary”. Although they are in the middle of a life devastated by repeated crimes, the participants showed their struggles to become normal members of society in their own way in their jungle-like life and longing for change through storytelling. The results of this study are expected to be appropriate as basic data for counseling for potential criminal and early adult offenders.

본 연구는 아동기외상이 초기성인 누범자의 범죄행위에 미치 는 영향을 탐색하고자 한다. 연구방법은 Connelly와 Clandinin (2000)의 내러티브 탐구(Narrative Inquiry)방법을 사용하였으 며 이를 위해 교도소 수용자 중에 ACE검사에서 6점 이상 나온 세 명을 최종 선정했다. 개방적 인터뷰방식으로 심층면접을 통해 아동기외상이 초기성인 누범자들의 범죄에 끼친 영향 탐색에서 반복적으로 나온 주제는 “꼼짝달싹할 수 없음”, “떠돎”, “하루하 루 닥치는 대로 살아감”, “짜릿함에 몰입함”, “제어가 안 됨” 등 5개가 도출되었고 하위범주는 15개 도출되었다. 자신의 삶에 대 한 조망에 대한 주제어로는 “낮은 자존감과 합리화”, “연결에의 욕구”, “평범함에 대한 소망”등 3개가 도출되었다. 비록 반복된 범죄로 인해 피폐된 삶의 한 가운데에 있지만, 참가자들은 이야 기하기를 통해 자신의 정글 속 같은 삶 안에서 나름대로 사회의 정상적인 구성원이 되고자하는 몸부림과 변화에 대한 갈망을 보 여주었다. 본 연구결과는 유사한 사례를 지닌 성인초기 범죄자나 출소자 들, 잠재적 범죄에 노출될 환경에 처한 아동ㆍ청소년들을 위한 교육과 상담의 기초 자료로 적절할 것으로 기대한다.
