This paper examines how the Japanese rock music changed in the 1970s, which can be marked as the transition period from counter culture to commercial culture. This will help us to understand the diversity of Japanese commercial culture which has developed since the 1970s. In this regard, previous studies have paid attention to the role of rock band, Happy End. Happy End is famous for using colloquial Japanese lyrics in rock music and singing individual daily lives instead of politics or community. In addition, Happy End had a significant impact on J-POP musicians by breaking away from both traditional music and American rock music. On the other hand, Carol contrasted markedly with Happy End in that this rock band promoted itself not with music but with its peculiar fashion. Carol gained popularity by its hybrid style, which was revealed in its retro fashion and English-Japanese mixed lyrics. Carol lacked the originality which Happy End had shown, but Carol made Japanese rock music popular by valuing the signifier and parody over the signified and narrative. Especially, its fashion, called Yankee style, still exerts influence on the local teenagers. The reason why Happy End and Carol differs is that they represent disparate social class. Whereas Happy End expressed the sensitivity of college students and cultural elites in Tokyo, Carol spoke for the blue collar workers or low-educated youngsters in the local provinces. Therefore, in order to understand the transition process from counterculture to commercial culture in Japan, it is necessary to review Carol as well as Happy End. Comparing these two rock bands, we can find out that Japanese commercial culture had dynamic and diverse aspects in the 1970s.

본 논문에서는 카운터 컬처에서 상업문화로 전환되는 1970년대에 록 음악이 어떤 변화의 과정을 거쳤는지 고찰했다. 이는 1970년대 이후 다양하게 전개되는 일본의 상업문화를 이해하는 데 필요한 작업이다. 이와 관련해 일본 대중음악에 관한 선행연구에서는 록 밴드 핫피엔도의 역할에 주목해왔다. 핫피엔도는 구어체 일본어 가사를 창안해 공동체가 아니라 개인의 일상을 노래했다. 또한 일본 대중 음악이 미국과 전통으로부터 자립하는 계기를 마련해 후대의 J􋹲POP에 지대한 영 향을 끼쳤다고 평가받는다. 한편, 록 밴드 캐롤은 음악성이나 가사가 아니라 이미지와 패션 스타일로 자신 들을 알리며 핫피엔도와 차별되는 성격을 보였다. 그들은 문화혼종의 특색이 드 러나는 복고풍 패션과 영어와 일어가 혼용된 노래 가사로 대중적 인기를 획득했 다. 핫피엔도와 같은 독창성을 캐롤에서부터 찾기는 힘드나 캐롤은 기의나 서사 보다 기표와 패러디를 중시해 일본의 록 음악이 대중화하는 데 크게 공헌했다. 특히 양키 스타일로 불리는 패션은 오늘날까지도 지방 청소년들에게 영향을 끼치 고 있는 것이다. 이와 같이 핫피엔도와 캐롤이 상반되는 모습을 보이는 이유는 그들이 표상하 는 계층이 서로 다르기 때문이다. 핫피엔도가 도쿄의 대학생이나 문화 엘리트들 의 감수성을 표현했다고 한다면 캐롤은 지방의 청소년들이나 대학교에 진학하지 않는 블루컬러의 심정을 대변하고 있었다. 따라서 1970년대 카운터 컬처에서 상 업문화로 어떻게 전환되는지 명확히 이해하기 위해서는 핫피엔도와 더불어 캐롤 도 같이 분석할 필요가 있다. 이 둘을 같이 비교하면 당시 일본의 상업문화가 다 채롭고 역동적으로 전개되고 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있기 때문이다.
