The purpose of this article is to examine the feature and meaning of knowledge in “Toegye Folktale” from the perspective of the ‘possible world theory.’ The knowledge is a referent point to approach each version of Toegye’s story on a single point of view, and through the keyword knowledge, stories of Toegye’s nom de plume[號], ‘fox marble’, and set of events using knowledge are sequentially able to be examined. The tales of Toegye’s nom de plume tell about the relationship between fictional and historical texts. Fictional texts such as Toegye folktale cannot be disparaged based on the historical world or accepted as a result of distortion and refraction of the historical world. This is because the fictional text is connected to the practices of humans that create stories like historical texts. The fictional world should be regarded as an independent and ontologically different world in the Actual World(AW). Toegye’s folktale related to ‘fox marble’ allows you to establish the relationship between the Actual World(AW), Textual Actual World(TAW), and Textual Referential World(TRW). TRW is a referent point that defies the TAW, and presents an instrumental basis for listeners to immerse themselves in narrative and accept the authenticity of fictional statements within the fictional world. Therefore, Toegye folktale is independent of the real world, and listeners of story can feel the truth within the fictional narrative. Toegye’s deeds in Toegye’s tales show the desires of the people who enjoy folktales. This is because the desires of the people who enjoy folktales deal with how knowledge should be used through Toegye and what role intellectuals who cultivate academics should play. Above all, the possible world of Toegye folktale creates another Toegye shape and deals with the problem of reality. The possible world constituted by Toegye’s folktale has an independent relationship with the real world and reflects the problems of reality, so it has been able to maintain its transmission power so far.

본고에서는 退溪설화를 연구 대상으로 삼아 설화에서 그려내는 지식의 성격과 의미를 가능세계(Possible World)의 관점에서 살펴보고자 했다. 지식은 파편화 되 어있는 퇴계 설화의 각편들을 함께 아울러서 접근하기 위해 임의로 설정한 참조점 이다. 지식이라는 주제어를 통해 ‘퇴계의 號’, ‘여우구슬’, ‘지식을 활용한 행적’ 등을 순차적으로 살펴보았다. ‘퇴계의 호’에 대한 설화는 허구적 텍스트와 역사적 텍스트의 관계에 대해 이야 기해준다. 퇴계 설화와 같은 허구적인 텍스트는 역사적 세계에 근거하여 폄하되거 나 역사적 사실에 대한 왜곡과 굴절의 결과로 받아들일 수 없다. 허구적 텍스트는 역사적 텍스트와 같이 이야기를 만들어내는 인간의 실천적인 행위와 연결되어 있 기 때문이다. 허구적 세계는 실제세계(Actual World, AW)에서 독립되어 있으면 서 존재론적으로 자주적인 세계로 간주해야 한다. ‘여우구슬’과 관련된 퇴계 설화는 실제세계(AW), 텍스트의 실제세계(Textual Actual World, TAW), 텍스트의 참조세계(Textual Referential World, TRW)의 관계를 설정할 수 있게 해준다. 텍스트의 참조세계(TRW)는 텍스트의 실제세계 (TAW)를 解號하는 참조점이며, 퇴계 설화의 가능세계가 허구적 세계 안에서 聽 者들이 서사에 몰입하고 허구적 진술의 진실성을 수용하게 되는 계기적 근거를 제 시한다. 따라서 퇴계 설화를 듣는 청자들은 허구적인 서사 안에서 이를 하나의 현 실로 받아들이게 된다. 퇴계 설화에서 퇴계가 보여준 행적은 설화 향유층의 욕망을 보여준다. 설화 향유 층의 욕망은 가능세계 속의 퇴계를 통해 지식이 어떻게 활용되어야 하며, 학문을 닦는 지식인들이 어떤 역할을 해야 하는지를 강조하고 있다. 무엇보다 퇴계 설화의 가능세계는 또 다른 퇴계의 형상을 창조하며 현실의 문제를 다루고 있다. 퇴계 설 화가 구성하는 가능세계는 실제세계와 독립적인 관계를 가지면서도 현실의 문제를 반영하고 있기 때문에 지금까지 전승력을 유지시켜 올 수 있었다.
