Shame is an emotion which combines self-consciousness with the opinion of others. For this reason, a view focused on the self-consciousness regards shame as autonomous emotion, while a view not focused on such sees it as a heteronomous emotion. But this kind of distinction is not the matter of nature of shame, but of playing a role in morality. Contemporary tendency to draw negative aspects of shame undermines the importance of positive rol e of shame. In this paper I inquire ways to encourage the constructive rol e of shame through the l ens of M. Nussbaum’s analysis of shame. Nussbaum distinguishes two types of shame: primitive shame and constructive shame. The p rimitive s hame i s a r esul t of narcissistic f ailure and rel ate to the desire of perfection, whil e constructive shame is a resul t of self-examination about one’s way of life and commitment. Somehow we need to link primitive shame as a background emotion and the desire of perfection, as perfectionism is likely to keep shame away from playing a role in morality. This paper attempts to recall the constructive role of shame. For this reason I suggest that self-regard should not be mistaken for the self-centered, and that we need to recognize the limitations of our own self-conception.

수치심의 부정적인 측면에 대한 논의가 팽배한 현상은 상대적으로 수치심의 도덕적 역할 에 대한 인식을 약화시킨다. 수치심은 자신이 수치를 느끼는 감정소지자이면서 자신에 대한 가치평가를 반영하는 자의식적 감정인 동시에 타자의 시선을 매개로 한다는 점에서 타율적 인 감정이기도 하다. 이러한 이중적 인지구조는 수치심의 도덕적 역할에 대한 논란의 원인 이 된다. 이 글은 수치심은 자신이 원하는 방식으로 존재하지 않는다는 평가판단을 구성요 소로 하는 감정이며, 건설적 역할을 할 수 있다는 관점에서 마사 누스바움의 수치심 분석을 도구로 이를 위한 방법을 탐구한다. 누스바움은 수치심을 원초적 수치심과 건설적 수치심으로 구분한다. 원초적 수치심은 완 전성을 지향하는 욕구와 외접해 있으며 나르시시즘적 좌절에서 유래한다. 이런 이유로 완벽 주의는 원초적 수치심을 강화하는 기제로 작용한다. 반면에 건설적 수치심은 자신들이 지닌 삶의 방식과 책임에 대한 비판적 성찰의 결과로 갖게 된다. 수치심이 건설적 역할을 하기 위해서는 원초적 수치심이 우리에게 배경감정으로 있다는 사실을 인식하고 완전성에 대한 욕구를 자각하는 것이 필요하다. 이 글은 원초적 수치심을 지양하면서 수치심이 건설적 역 할을 할 수 있는 토대로 자존감과 자기 인식의 확장을 제시함으로써 수치심의 도덕적 역할 에 대한 환기를 목적으로 한다.
