Diplomatic gifts were generally exchanged in diplomacy with people of another country across the border. This paper verifies the private transactions that occur behind the diplomatic stage, even though private transactions are prohibited. The period of analysis was from May to July 1811, and the subject was the merchandise exchanged by Korean and Japanese people in the Tsushima Domain, as confirmed through the Diaries of Tsushima, which was written by Kusaba Haisen (草場珮川). The analysis concentrated on the possibility that 42 kinds of Korean commodities were traded privately with Japanese people by the Korean Embassy in Japan. The results have verified that private transactions of merchandise could not be eradicated as long as there was an opportunity for gains from trade in the diplomatic activities.

外交를 위해 국경을 넘은 사람들이 외교 목적으로 상대국 사람들과 교환하는 물품을 가리켜 외교 선물 또는 예물이라 부른다. 여기에서는 外交使節이 외국에 가서 貿易活動을 하는 것이 금지되어 있었는데도, 외교 선물[예물]의 공식적인(公禮單) 또는 비공식적인(私禮單) 교환과 별개로, 외교 무대 뒤에서 이루어진 은밀한 거래에 대하여 살펴보았다. 이 글은 구사바 하이센[草場珮川, 1787～1867]이 1811년 5월 1일부터 7월 4일까지 對馬島(對馬藩)에서 직접 경험한 것을 기록한 󰡔津島日記󰡕를 분석한 것이다. 그 가운데 ｢조선 물건과 정가(韓物幷定價)｣라고 적은 기록물을 바탕으로 通信使行 때 42종의 물품이 私的으로 賣買되었을 가능성에 주목하였다. 外交使行 중에 무역을 통해 이익을 얻을 기회가 존재하는 한, 사적 매매를 완전히 근절할 수는 없었음을 1811년 사례를 통해 확인할 수 있었다.
