This study examines the effects of perceived value of patents before international filing on the likelihood of international application of these patents. This study suggests the number of inventors involved in the creation of patents as their importance recognized by firms and the period before patent grant representing perceived uncertainty about patents’ value. Based on granted patents filed by Korean pharmaceutical companies from 1985 to 2013, the empirical results show that the number of inventors relative to firm size positively affects the likelihood of international application of patents. The findings also show that the longer the period before patent grant is, the lower the likelihood of international application of patents. These empirical results imply that it may be necessary to establish relevant policies to help firms pursuing internationalization evaluate exactly their own patents.

본 연구는 기업이 국제 출원 이전에 인지한 특허 가치가 해당 특허의 국제 출원 가능성에 미 치는 영향을 분석한다. 본 연구는 국제 출원 이전에 기업이 판단하는 특허 중요도를 나타내는 특허 개발에 참여한 발명가 수와 특허 가치에 대한 불확실성을 나타내는 특허 등록 판정까지 소요된 기간을 제시하고 이들이 특허의 국제 출원 가능성에 미치는 영향을 한국 제약 산업을 대상으로 실증 분석하였다. 한국 제약 기업들이 1985년부터 2013년 사이에 출원한 등록 특허들 을 이용하여 실증 분석한 결과 기업 규모 대비 발명가 수는 특허의 국제 출원 가능성에 긍정적 인 영향을 미쳤다. 그리고 등록 판정까지 소요된 기간이 길수록 특허의 국제 출원 가능성이 작 아지는 것을 발견하였다. 실증 분석 결과는 기업의 특허 관련 의사결정에서 특허 가치에 대한 인지적 요소가 개입할 수 있으며 국제화를 추구하는 첨단 기술 기업의 자사 특허 가치를 파악 하는 것을 도울 수 있는 정책이 필요함을 시사한다.
