Participation in other household's family events such as weddings and funerals entails financial expenditures and time costs of attending the events in South Korea. Such costs help maintain social networks, which could affect individual labor market outcomes by facilitating job search or increasing job retention rate. We explore this possibility by estimating the effect of ceremonial expenditures on labor market outcomes of the late middle aged household heads. We find that the increase in the cumulative ceremonial expenditures increases the employment probability of the household head and the number of months working in a year.

경조사비 지출에는 금전적 지출과 경조사 참석이라는 시간 비용이 수반되며, 이것이 사회적 네트워크를 유지하는 비용으로써 축적된다면 개인의 노동시장 성과에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 즉 경조사비 지출이 쌓여 형성된 인적 네트워크로 인해서 구직에 드는 비용 또는 기간이 감소하거나, 직장유지율이 높아지는 등의 이익이 나타날 수 있다. 이러한 사회적 네트워크의 효과를 분석하기 위해서는 일회성 경조사비 지출의 액수보다는 누적된 경조사비 지출에 대한 정보가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 재정패널을 이용하여 13년 동안의 누적 경조사비 지출액이 해당 가구의 중고령층 가구주의 노동시장 성과에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 누적 경조사비 지출액의 증가는 2019년 기준으로 가구주가 취업해 있을 확률을 높이고, 연간 근로 개월을 늘리는 것으로 추정되었다.
